ELECTRIC SPARKING IGNITER FOR EXPLOSlVE-ENGINES- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 784,626, dated March 14, 1905.
Application filed June 22,1903. Serial No. 162,648.
Cloud, in the county of Stearns and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Sparking Igniters for Explosive-Engines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to electric sparking igniters for explosh e-engines and the like; and its object is to provide an igniter which shall be more simple, durable, and eflicient, but
less expensive, than any heretofore proposed.
The nature, characteristic. features, and scope of the invention will be more clearly understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is an elevational view of the eccentric of a gasolene-engine equipped with an igniter embodying my improvements. Referring to the drawings, A represents the main body of the igniter, which is threaded, as at (1/, for reception into the head of the en- Said body A is drilled twice, as at a (1 for the reception, respectively, of the stationary insulated electrode B and the movable electrode C.
On the outer end of the movable electrode O is secured, by means ofa tap er pin, an arm or trip-block l), which carries a detachable hardened-steel plate E, having beveled edge against which the plunger F strikes, raising by its upward movement the arm D, thereby. turning the movable electrode and causing the two platinum contacts Gon the respective inner ends of the electrodes to engage one another until the eccentric H, which carries said plunger, has traveled sufficiently to permit the hardened-steel plunger F to suddenly snap off the plate E, thereby releasing the trip-block, which is retracted by its spring I to its normal position, thus breaking the electric circuit at the sparking contacts G and producing a good spark, which ignites the cylinder charge. The downward movement of the block D is limited by the pin or projection K. I may here remark that the sparking contacts may be wiped of soot or oil by bringing the contacts together firmly and pressing in on the movable electrode O, which has a limited lateral movement, being held to place by a I spring J. Saidspring, aside from holding the electrode Ofirmly up against the body A, and thereby preventing leakage, also permanently establishes the electrical connection between the body A and the movable electrode.
The depending portion A of body A is drilled and tapped for the reception of a stud L, which carries a square block M, the arrangement being such that the block M may oscillate slightly. The block M is bored for the reception ofa projection N of a guideblock N, sleeved upon the eccentric-rod F, the said guide-block being normally held against the block M through the instrumentality of a spring O, secured to a stationary part of the engine. It will thus be manifest that should the direction of the eccentric H be changed from any cause the beveled under side of the plunger F would slide off of and back under the plate E, due to the spring 0, permitting the guide-block N to follow and accommodate itself to the position of the rod F, thus preventing injury to the plate E or plunger F.
The plunger F is accommodated in the u pper end of the rod F and is seated therein upon a coil-spring P. The said rod F is slotted, as at f, and a projection f on the plunger penetrates the slot and limits the movement of the plunger.
To compensate for wear of the parts, the jam-nut Q, may be unscrewed and the rod F properly adjusted. The spark may also be timed by adjusting the eccentric H through the medium of the nut q.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains that modifications may be made in details without departing from the spirit thereof. Hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction and arrangement of parts hereinabove set forth, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings; but,
