SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 784,573, dated March 14, 1905.
Application filed March 25, 1904. Serial No. 199,895.
T r/,Z/ whom, it Darty concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT Gr. KUNDE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, and State of llfisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Olasps, of which the following is a specification.
Uy invention relates to improvements in clasps.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a forni of clasp in which the sides of the clasp when closed will be substantially parallel throughout its length, the device thus constructed having no projecting portions to catch upon garments or interfere with the comfort of the wearer.
Another object of my invention is to provide a form of clasp in which a connectinglink may be employed to lock the clasp in closed position, said link being permanently connected with one of the clasp-jaws.
In the following description reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my invention. Fig. 2 is an edge View of the same, showing' the liaws in open position, with dotted lines indicating' the closed position. Fig. 3 is a sectional view drawn on line rc a of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional view drawn on line z/ 1/ of Fig. 1.
1 and 2 are clamping-plates, the plate 2 having an inwardly-projecting loop 3 for the reception of the pintle 4, which also passes through ears 5, connected with the plate 1. The plate l is provided with an inner facing 7, of rubber or Yother suitable non-metallic material, and the plate 2 is provided with a similar facing 8, having a central projection 9, which enters a corresponding' socket in the part 7. The central portion of the plate 2 is'extended beyond the pintle and forms a hook 10, in which a link 11 is permanently engaged, the extremity 12 of the hook being brought into close proximity with the plate 1 near the pintle. rlhe side portions of the plate 1 are also extended beyond the pintle and offset, the end portion of this extension being' doubled upon itself to form a hook 14, which is shorter than the hook 10, and the extremity of which at 15 is sufliciently distant from the pintle to permit a release of the link 11. lt will be observed that the shank portions of the hooks 1() and 14 are both substantially in the plane of the plate 2, while their extremities are substantially in the plane of the plate 1. The hook 14 near its extremity is bent inwardly, as shown at 17, so that the link 11 can be slipped past this portion of the hook only by the application of force suliicient to cause a slight yielding' of the hooks 14. 1S is a strap or other flexible connection looped through the link 11 and serving to connect the device with any suitable support.
In use when it is desired to open the clasp the link 11 is moved downwardly until that portion which extends through the hooks approaches the pintle and passes the inwardlybent portion 17 of the hooks 14, whereby the clamping-plates 1 and 2 may be separated, the link 11 remaining' engaged by the hook 10. Vhen the clamping-plates are again closed, the link 11 is kept in proximity to the pintle until the hooks 10 and 14 are brought together, whenthe link 11 is drawn forcibly into the hooks 14, thus binding the clasp forcibly in closed position. The metal composing the clasp is slightly'resilient, whereby it is permitted to yield su'iiciently to enable the clasp to close with any ordinary piece of fabric interposed between the parts 7 and 8.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isw
1. In a device of the described class, the combination of a pair of clamping-plates hinged together and extended beyond the hinge to form hooks; the shank portions of said hooks being substantially in the plane of one of the plates and the end portions of said hooks being substantially in the plane of the other plate, when the device is in closed position; and a link engaged by said hooks; the hooked portion of one of the plates having its extremity brought close to the pintle, and the hooked portion of the other plate having an extremity sufficiently distant therefrom to permit the disengagement of the link.
2. In a device of the described class, the combination of a pair of clamping-plates hinged together; hooks connected with the IOO respective plates and extended on the opposite side of the hinge from that occupied by the plates; the shank portions of all the hooks being in the plane of one of the plates and the extremities in the plane of the other plate when said plates are closed together; and a link permanently engaged in one of the hooks and engageable in the other hooks.
3. In a device of the deseribed'class, the combination of a pair of clamping-plates hinged together; hooks Connected with the respective plates and extended on the opposite side of the hinge from that occupied by the plates; the shank portions of all the hooks being in the plane of one of the plates and the extremities in the plane of the other plate When said plates are closed together; and a link permanently engaged in one hook and adapted to lit snugly in the other hooks; said last-mentioned hooks being shorter than the one in which the link is permanently engaged.
4. In a device of the described class, the
combination of a pair of clamping-plates hinged together; hooks connected with the respective plates and extended on the opposite side of the hinge from that occupied by the plates; the shank portions of the hooks being all in the plane of one of the plates and the extremities in the plane of the other plate when said plates are closed together; and a link permanentlyengaged in one hook and adapted to lit snugly in the other hooks; said last-mentioned hooks being shorter than the one in which the link is permanently engaged, and one of the hooks having an inwardly-projecting bend adapted to yieldingly obstruct the passage of the link.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
ALBERT Gr. KUNDE.
