FUEL-ECONOMIZER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 784,560, dated March 14, 1905.

Be it known that I, FRANCIS WILLIAM GREEN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Economiser \Vorks, Wakefield, county of York, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fuel- Economizers for Steam-Boilers, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to so construct the top boxes and branches of fuel-econoinizers that the lids can be easily and readily placed in position or removed, thereby greatly facilitating alterations or repairs either to the top boxes or the pipes.

My invention will be clearly understood from the following description, aided by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the top box of a fuel-economizer, showing the lids in position; and Fig. 2 is aplan of same.

For the purpose of this invention I make one, A, or more of the lid-holes in the top box B of a fuel-economizer slightly larger than the others, B, so that all the lids C can be passed through such hole A and moved under their respective lid-holes for connection to the hole in the well-known manner. As is well known, the walls of the holes are angled for receiving the lids, whose peripheries are also angled to suit the angle of the wall of the hole, the object being that the lid shall fit the hole tightly when pulled up in place by the usual bridge or bolt. Now if one hole is made,

say, with its smallest diameter of a size onesixteenth of an inch larger than the largest diameter of the lid all the lids can be passed through that hole for connection to the top box.

In the branch D, I make two slots E E along the walls and at right angles to the box, so that the lid C for the larger hole A can be inserted into the top box B through the branch I) by causing the edges of the lid 0 to ride in the slots E E, cut or formed in the branch, and be easily removed therefrom in the same manner. By this construction I am enabled to have six bolt-holes F in the branch flange G and also to pass a larger lid into the top box B than by present known constructions.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a fuel-economizer, a top box or header having a plurality of holes one or more of which are of larger diameter than the others, to permit lids for the smaller holes to be passed therethrough, and having a tubular branch with internal slots or grooves at right angles to the top box of header to permit lids for the larger of said holes to be passed into the box or header, as set forth.
