SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 784,347, dated March 7, 1905. I

To all whlmb it uny concern.-
Be it known that I, RICHARD J. Pownas, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Gate-Valve, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates particularly to improvements in gate-valves for sewer-pipes, the object being to provide a gate-valve of novel construction so arranged as to automatically close the sewer-pipe and prevent the inlet of waste or sediment should a backflow of water occur.
I will describe a gate-valve embodying my invention and then pointout the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a partof this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view, partly in section, of a gate-valve mechanism embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line on w of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a section on the line y y of Fig. l, and Fig. 4 is a similar section showing the valve closed. 7
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a casing of any suitable metal, and leading through one end of the casing is the dischargepipe section 2, and leading from the opposite end to the main sewer is the pipe-section 3, which is on a lower plane than the section 2. The bottom of the casing is substantially trough-shaped, as indicated at 4, and over this trough-shaped portion is a perforated pipe 5, resting on a perforated bottom 6. The end of the pipe-section 2 is inclined, as clearly indicated in the drawings, and is designed to be closed by a gate-valve 7, consisting of a plate of suitable metal, and extended across this valve is a bar 8, the ends of which connect with levers 9, mounted to swing on studs 10 at the sides of the pipe 2. A bail 11 connects with the short members of the levers 9that is, at the opposite side of the pivotal point to that upon which the valve is mounted. Therefore a comparatively short movement of the levers will cause the closing of the valve. The bail 11 engages with an arm 12, extended from a float 13. -This float 13 is pivoted at its rear end to the side walls of the casing l, and it is of hollow form, passing over the top of the perforated pipe 5 and down the sides thereof.
In operation under normal conditions, the partsmay be in the position as indicated in Fig. 3. Should backwater occur, however, from the main sewer. the clear water from the pipe 3 will pass through the perforations of the pipe-section 5, causing the float to rise, and the upward movement of the float will swing the valve to closing position, as indicated in Fig. 4., thus preventing the entrance of sediment or other matter of a solid nature to the pipe 2, and consequently preventing possible overflow in a basement or the like.
The perforated section of the pipe will permitof the free and quick outflow of water, but Will prevent the passing of solid matter into the casing.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a gate-valve mechanism, a casing, a pipe-section leading therein, a pipe-section leading therefrom, a perforated pipe-section in the casing, a float mounted to swing over said perforated pipe-section, a valve for closing the first-named pipe-section, and a connection between said valve and said float.
2. In a gate-valve mechanism, a casing, a pipe-section leading therein, a pipe-section leading therefrom, a perforated pipe-section in the casing, a float mounted to swing over said perforated pipe-section. a valve for closing the first-named pipe-section, levers carrying said valve, and a connection between said levers and said float.
3. A gate-valve mechanism comprising a casing, a pipe-section leading therein, a pipesection leading from the casing, and on a lower plane than the first-named pipe-section, a perforated pipe-section between the first two named sections, a box-like float extended over the perforated pipe-section, a valve for closing the end of the first-named section, levers to which said valve is connected, a bail attached to the short members of said levers, and an arm carried by the float and connecting with said bail.
