To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, RILEY ALBAOII, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Gilead in the county of Morrow and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stilts, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a shnple and substantial form of stilt, and the essential feature of the invention particularly resides in the specific manner of mounting the foot-rest upon the stilt-bar. The foot-rest is adapted for any desired adjustment in the lel'igth of the stilt-bar, so that the stilt may be readily used by persons having different degrees of skill in walking upon the same.

The invention further embodies a specilic form of foot-rest having an adjustable arm provided with a stop adapted to engage the foot and to thus reduce the liability of slipping of this member from the rest.

For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings.

l/Vhile the essential and characteristic features of the invention are susceptible of modilication, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a stilt embodying my invention. in the practical cmbodii'nent of my invention the stilt comprises the stilt-barl and the foot-rest 2 as the principal members thereof.

The stilt-bar 1 may be of any suitable form having the necessary substantiality for the purpose of the in vention and preferably consists of a round bar, the foot-rest?bc1ng n-ovided with a clamp adapted to receive and engage the bar 1 in order to properly support the foot-rest in an adjusted position. The clamp carried by the foot-rest consists of an eye or ring 3, integrally formed therewith, which member adapted to receive the stiltbar. The eye or ring is split atone side, as shown at 41, so that same may have a certain amount of spring-engaging action. Latcrally extending lugs 5 project from the split portions of the ring or eye 3, and said lugs are perforated,so as to receive a draw-bolt or screw 6, by which the sections of the eye or ring are adapted to be tightened in clamping relation about the stilt-bar l. The foot-rest 2 extends laterally from the ring or eye 3, having a slight upward inclination, so that the foot will normally tend to move toward the stilt-bar when resting thereon. The portion of the ring or eye 3 adjacent the foot-rest- 2 is extended downwardly, as shown at 7, so as to obtain a greater frictional bearing against the inner side of the stilt-bar, and this construction namely, as regards the portion 7 above mentioned is advantageous for obvious reasons. The provision the extended portion 7 is such as to admit of the use of a brace 8, which constitutes an integral web extending from the ring or eye 3 and formed in the angle between the rest and the said eye. The web which forl ns the brace 8 is of intogral formation with the rest and ring.

Adjustable upon the foot-rest 2 and longitudinally thereof is the arm 9, said arm being received in a recess 10 upon the under side of the rest. The arm 9 is provided at its outer end with an upward extension 11, which extension serves in the capacity of a stop to engage the foot of the user of the stilt to prevent likelihood of displacement of the same. The extension or stop member 11 is designed to be laterally adjustable toward and from the stilt-bar 1, so that the foot-rest may be readil y used by persons having ditlerent-sized feet, and the part 11 is curved inwardly toward the stilt-bar at a point between its ends, as shown at 152, said curved portion being designed to more firmly hold the foot in place upon the foot-rest. The arm 9 is attached to the footrest by means of a suitable fastenil'lg in the form of a screw-bolt-13, as illustrated, said bolt passing through the opening in the footrest and through the elongated slot 14 in the arm 9. The slot let is provided in order to admit of the necessary longitudinal adjustment of the arm 9 for the purpose above described.

The foot-rest constructed in accordance with my invention may be made of cast-iron, steel, or other metal, the prerequisite being substantiality. the foot-rest may be used in accordance with any style of stilt-bar, same being as well adapted for the application to the short or duck-leg stilt, which are usually strapped to the legs, or those having the usual handles.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. In a stilt, the combination of a stilt-bar,

a foot-rest, means for securing the foot-rest to the stilt-bar, an arm mounted upon the footrest, and a stop extension projecting upwardly from the arm and curved inwardly toward the stilt-bar at a point between its ends.
