Be it known that I, FELIX NORMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Patterson, in the parish of St. Mary and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loading-l\[achines, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a novel apparatus for handling cane when supplying the same to the carrier to be fed to the mill. Obviously the mechanism may be employed in a general way for loading and unloading material and commodities of different kinds.
The apparatus embodies a crane or derrick of peculiar formation and actuating means forming an essential part of the apparatus to enable control of the mechanism under all conditions.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and drawings hereto attached.
While the essential and characteristic features of the invention are susceptible of modification, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of a crane or derrick embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a detail View of the operating mechanism for the several cables. Fig. 3 is a sectional end view of Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic view in perspective of the turn-tableandoperatingmeanstherefor. Fig.
5 is a side view of the upper portion of the derrick, on a larger scale, parts being broken away and portions being in section. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the derrick, the king-post being in section, the boom and braces having parts broken away and the actuating means being omitted. Fig. 7 is a side View of the lower portion of the derrick, on a larger scale, showing the operating mechanism in position. Fig. 8 is a diagrammatic view of the means for operating the carriage or trolley upon the boom. Fig. 9 is a diagrammatic view of the means for raising and lowering the grap ile.
Fig. 10 is a diagrammatic view of the means for opening and closing the grapple.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The derrick or crane com prises the kingpost 1, boom 2, rear and lateral braces 23, and a plurality of guys for the several parts. The derrick is mounted upon a stationary circular platform 4, so as to be moved to any angiilar position to conveniently receive the load and deliver the same at the required point of discharge. A collar or sleeve 5 is secured to the upper end of the king-post I and has lateral ears, to which the upper ends of the several guys are connected. A. bearing-cap 6 receives the upper end of the king-post and is pre vented from lateral movement by means of guys 7, leading therefrom and anchored to the ground at a proper distance from the foot of the derrick, so as to brace the structure. A series of pulleys I3 are arranged near the outer end of the boom, and a corresponding series of pulleys 14 and 15 are located near the inner end of the boom to support the several cables, as will inner end of the carriage and passes over one of the pulleys id and is connected to the drum cables.

\Vhcn the cable 27 is wound upon the drum 28, the grapple is elevated, and when said cable is unwound from the drum the grapple is lowered. The sheave-pulley 23 is connected by ropes or cords 29 with opposite members of the grapple in such a manner that when the sheave-pulley 23 is lowered with reference to the sheave-pulley 2a the grapple opens, and when said sheave-pulley 23 moves upward the jaws or members of the grapple close and retain the cane or other material or commodity to be loaded.
A shed or framework 30 is provided at the foot of the derrick and constitutes a housing for the operating parts-such as the engine, actuating means, and adjunctive parts said framework being conveniently reached by means of steps 31, attached thereto. The platform 4 is arranged below the framework 30, and its periphery is grooved to receive a rope or cable 32, which is fitted therein and passes over a series of guide-pulleys 33 and has its end portions connected to a drum 3 1 in such a manner as to wind in opposite directions thereon. hen one end portion of the rope or cablo 32 is wound upon the drum 3a, the opposite end portion is unwound from said drum, and as a consequence the framework and adjunctive parts are rotated in one direction. A reverse movement of the drum 34 causes the framework to rotate in the opposite direction.
From the foregoing it will be readily understood that the derrick is adapted to be swung about a vertical axis to any angular position and in any adjustment the grapple may be moved to any position within the length of the boom and either opened or closed or raised or lowered, as may be required, by proper manipulation of the several ropes or cables in the manner stated.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is In a loading-machine of the character described, the combination of a stationary circular platform, a derrick mounted upon said platform to swing to any angular position, a bearing and guys for the upper end of the derrick, a framework attached to and rotatable with the derrick, a plate pendent from the boom of the derrick, flanges projected from opposite sides of the plate, a carriage mounted to travel lengthwise of the boom and comprising spaced parts to embrace the said plate and having pulleys mounted upon the aforementioned flanges, cables connected to the carriage for running the same backward and forward, a grapple, acable for raising and lowering the grapple and having running connection with the carriage, another cable for opening and closing the grapple and having running connection with said carriage, a cable passing around said circular platform to effect rotation of the derrick, aframework mounted upon the derrick, and actuating means supported by means of said framework and having the several cables connected thereto, substantially as FELIX NORMAN.
