Description

No. mace?.
y nirris S'r Patented February 28, 1905.
ALFREDO DATTO, OF TURIN, lflAljY.
stem-sic nauwav.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 783,687, dated February 28, 1905.
Application filed November 20,1902. Serial No. 132,136.
To all whom t nutg/ concern:
Beit known that l, ALFREDO DIATTO, a subject oil the King of Italy, residing' at Turin, in the Kingdom ot' Italy, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric ltailways, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to improvements in magnetic apparatus Afor the distribution of current to electric tramways and railways by road contact. This class of apparatus has the detect that il a derivation ot' current is produced between the contact-pavement and the rails when the magnetic interruptor retakes its normal position oi rest there is set up between the movable contact and the fixed contact of the interrupter a voltaic arc which impairs the apparatus and may consequently be the cause of accidents.
The improvement which forms the subject of the present invention has for its object to obviate the said inconvenience by means or' the application o'l' a magnetic extinguisher which has for its object to suddenly extinguish the are which would have a tendency to be produced by a derivation such as above referred to or from any other cause.
rllhe accompanying drawings represent the application of the present invention of magnetic extinguisher to apparatus of my system; but it is evident that such an extinguisher may be applied in an analogous manner to other similar systems.
AFigure l is a vertical section, the left halt' drawn on the line l 2 of Fig. 2, the right half drawn on the line 2 3 of the same figure; and Fig. 2 is a plan ot' one mode of carrying the invention into eiiect. Fig. 3 is a vertical section showing a modilication.
llhe magnetic extinguisher is constituted by an iron ring a, extending by the pie-ces into the interior of the apparatus and by the wiref, which is conveniently wound around the ring c. 1f the wire f is traversed by the electric current, b twill be the poles of a double electromagnct, and the llnes of magnetic force going from one pole to the other across the space traversed by the movable contact ofthe apparatus will have the faculty of extinguishing the arcs in question. To cause the current to pass into the wire f, one of its extremities may be made to communicate with the underground cable and the other with the mercury in the cup g; but the arrangement represented at Fig. 3 gives a better insulation and facilitates the setting up oig the apparatus by establishing connections at the upper part of the contact-box. These con nections are established on two iron disks it and r1, insulated from each other and in communication the one with the fixed contact c, the other with the road contact c. AIn this manner the current traverses the windings, the iron ring or electromagnet c after contact is established between Z and c, and passes to the road Contact c through the piece L. The pieces a, and 'al havingI a very slightly different potential, their insulation from each other presents no di'fliculty. As soon as the contact ceases between d and c the current ceases to pass into the windings oi the ring or elec tromagnet c unless from any cause an are is established between the contacts, in which` case this arc is immediately extinguished.
Having fully described my invention, what l claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination withV magnetic interrupters, used. in the distribution of current to electric tramways and railways by road contacts, of a magnetic extinguisher consisting of an iron ring surrounding the apparatus, pieces connected to the ring and extending into the interior ot' the apparatus, a wire wound round the iron ring and electric connections to the ends ot' said wire, substantially as herein set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence oi two witnesses.
ALFREDO lHATTO.
