Be it known that [,JAMns Ronun'r Con, a citi zen of the United States, residing at Ansonia, in the county of New Haven, in the State of Connecticut., have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spinning-Rings, of which the following is a specification.
rl`he subject-matter of this invention is a sheet-metal spinningi'i1ig, and the present application is a division of my application Serial No. 216,905, which covers the manufac ture of the same.
Spinning-rings have been heretofore pro duced in various ways both from solid stock and from sheet metal, but have been subject to various defects caused by their structural :form or the steps necessary to produce the same.
lt is the object of the present invention to produce a double-flanged ring formed from sheet metal by steps, which while inexperisive and unobjeetionable in themselves produce a novel structural form possessing the many requirements of a commercial ring.
ln the drawings, in which like letters of refs erence indicate corresponding parts through out, Figures l, 2, and 3 represent a doubleflanged ring in three steps in its manufacture. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 represent a modification of a double-flanged ring'.
.R indicates the body of the ring, R the flange of different diameter, and w indicates the curved shoulder between the ring and the flange. inasmuch as the value of the ring itself depends upon its structure, and its structure in turn is the result of the several structural steps of its manufacture, a brief description of the same will be first given.
A tube of metal is first formed in any desirable manner, preferably by drawing' up a cup from a flat dish and removing the bottom from the same. This tube is then treated so as to produce an area which is to form the body of the spinni1igiing', and an area or areas to 'form the flanges of the spinning ring, the latter being of' a different diameter :from that of the body portion. In case the seam is to be on the outside of the ring vthe flanged portions are of a smaller diameter than the body portion, whereas 1n case the seam is to be internal the `flanged portions are larger than the body portion. rlhe production of these areas of different diai'ncter may obviously be brought about in a number of different ways; but l have found that the ring may be most successfully rolled on a loose mandrel to secure this result.

rlhe flange portion is then turned over to meet the central or body portion-A--that is, if the bodyportion is o'f a smallerdiameter than the flanged portion the latter is turned inward, while if the body portion is larger the flanged portion is turned outward. l. A Spinning-ring 'formed of sheet metal having a tubular body portion and double flanges at each end, said flanges each comprising an inwardly-projccting overlolded 'flange and an olitwardly-\' xojecting underlolded flange,

A spinning-ring formed o l sheet metal having a tubular body portion and double 'flanges at each end, said flanges each coinprising an inwardlyprojecting ('iverfoldcd flange and an outwardly-projecting underfolded 'flange with the edge joint disposed at the exterior of the ring and inwardly abutting against said body portion.
3. A spinning-ring 'formed of' sheet metal having a body portion and a flat-topl'ied traveler-race at each end, formed by a flange inwardly projecting from said body portion and doubled over upon itself and extended to ferm having a tubular body portion and a flattened I5 double flange at each end thereof, said double flanges comprising a laterally-bent portion, a portion doubled thereover to complete said flange, continued to form the adjoining flange and returned thereunder to abut against the 2O body portion.
