Be it known that We, EDWARD W. liARI- nnAUL'r and EDWIN l-l'. Hick, citizens of the United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Racks; and We do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

Our invention is animproved clothes-rack; and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.

The object of our invention is to provide an improved clothes-rack which may be lowered to enable the clothes to be hung thereon and may be then raised, so as to avoid obstructing the roomin which it is placed, and which when it is not in use may be folded up and very compactly disposed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a clothes-rack embodying our improvements, showing the same extended and in elevated position. Fig. 2 is a detail view showing the rack folded. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation, partly in section.

In the embodiment of our invention here shown a stud or supporting and guiding fastener l is adapted to be secured against one wall of a room or building and disposed in an upright position, so as to extend from the floor to the ceiling thereof. The same is pro vided on opposite sides near its front or outer side with guide-grooves 2 and flanges 3, which flanges form the outer sides of said guidegrooves. An arm 4: projects from one side of the stud, at a suitable distance from the lower end thereof, and has at its outer end on its front side a box or casing 5, in which is mounted awinclr6. The same is here shown as provided with a hand-crank 7, whereby it may be readily turned, and with a coacting ratchet-wheel 8 and pawl 9 to lock the winch and prevent the same from rotating in a reverse direction.

The frame 10 is slidable vertically on the stud and is here shown as comprising upper and lower arms 11 and 12, having central open ings 13 on their rear sides to receive the flanges 3 of the stud and. studs L to enter and travel in the guide-grooves 2. Upright bars 15 connect the end portions of the said bars 11 and 12 together. To the ends of the lower bar 12, on the front side thereof, are secured brackets 16, which project outwardly therefrom and are provided with curved slots 17. A rack-section 18, which comprises side bars and rungs, as shown, has its side bars pivot ally connected to the brackets 16, at 19, and is provided with stops 20, which operate in the slot 17. Thereby the said rack-section 18 is adapted to be extended outwardly to a horizontal position and be also folded up to a vertical position, as will be understood. The ends of the upper rung project, as at 21, beyond the side bars of the said raclvsection. To the ends of the upper bar 11 are hinged the side bars of the upper rack-section 22, and to the outer end of said section 22 is hinged, as at 23, an intermediate section 24. The side bars of the section 24: are provided at their outer ends with notches 25, which are adapted to engage the projecting ends 21 of the outer rung of the lower section 18. The section 24: may also be folded against the section 22 and the latter folded down upon the outer side of the section 18 when the latter is in folded position, thus enabling the various sections of the rack to be compactly disposed out of the way when not in use.

The frame .10 and the rack which it carries may be raised and lowered by means of suitable cords 26, which are attached to the bar I I. and to the winch and which are guided by suitable direction-pulleys 27, with which the arm 4 and the stud 1 are provided.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without req niring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
