MANLEY il. UHAPL'IN, OF SEAllLlC, llUlSlIlNGlTOlil.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 783.610, dated February 2r), 1905.
Application led april Z2, 1904. Serial No. 204,307.
Be it known that l, Manner J. (ln/WIJN, a citizen o't the United States, residing' at l'leattle, in the county o't King' and State oi' lashington, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Air-Vents 'for Beer-Barrels, ot' which the 'following' is a specilication, relerence being' had therein to the acconu'ianying' drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful in'lprovemcnts in air-vents for beer'barrels and the like.
lt has 'for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive construction ot air-vent which may be quickly and positively connected or detached from the receptacle where employed, and more I 'iarticularly for use with a bung'- socket such as illustrated and specilied in latent No. 729,545, issued June 2, 1,903, whereby the beer-tap therein described is made interchangeable with theair-vent oi' the present invention. 1t is obvious with the use o'l the beer-tap'described in the said invention that no supplemental means other than therein described is necessary to admit air into the barrel; .but many people prefer to use the ordinary spig'ot 'for withdrawing' the contents, and in such cases it is necessary that ai'r be supplied to replace the beer as drawn oli. This has heretofore been accomplished by air vent plugs having' tapered ends, which are driven into auger-holes made in the heads of barrels, a very unsatis'liactory arrangement, 'lor not only is it dil'licult to make a positive connection therebetween, but the tapering' ends o'li the plugs have a tendency to split the heads from blows delivered upon the plug' when securing' the same in place, and where tliel.)ar1'el-he:uls are not destroyed by splitting' the holes provided lor the plugs arez'tli'ter 'rei'ieated use so enlarged as to untit them 'lor continued service. l overcome the atorementioned objectionable 'features inherent to the aforementioned devices'by the novel construction and combination of devices hereinafter explained.
lfn the accompanying' drawings, illustrating' an embodiment oi'l my invention, Figure l 1s a central longitudinal section through a bung socket and a devlce embodying' my invention connected thereto. liig'. il is a similar view el'I the innig-socket. Fig'. 3 is a plan view oi Fig'. 2. Fig'. et is a detached elevation o'l the securing-sleeve shown in Fig'. l.
ln the said drawings the numeral l designates a bung-socket having' an exterior screwthread 2, whereby it is secured to a barrel. lhe socket is provided with a cylindrical chamber 3, intermediate an enlarged cavity 4t, and a contracted opening' or orilce 5 at the inner end of the socket. At the outer end ol: the cavity l is an interiorly-projecting' flange (i, through which extend two slots 7 dialnet rically opposite each other, and the inner 'laces 8 o'l each ol the parts oll the Ilang'e thus divided incline inwardly in the same circular direction 'from the respective slots, as plainly shown in Fig'. 2 and similarly to that described in the aforementioned patent.
l) is a sleeve oli less diameter than the opening' within the soeketsilang'e 6 and is provided with two laterallwprojecting studs lt), adapted to be entered throi'ig'h the slots l, so that when the sleeve is turned through the instrumentality oi' a handle ll they eng'ag'e with the. sloping' 'faces of the said l'lang'e. Fitted loosely within the said sleeve is a tube 12, carrying' externally an elastic annular washer 13, ol" rubber, preferably, and adapted to be connpressed between a shoulder 2O at the inner end oi the chamber 3 and the adjacent end lllot the said sleeve when the latter is'lorced inwardly by they action oi" the said studs as they are revolved under the laees 8 ol the tlai'ig'e parts, whereby a liquid and airtight packing is attained thereat.
Extending' within the outer end et the tube l2 and connected thereto, as by screw-threads lei, a plug'l5, having'anaxial boro 1G, which admits air from the outside toa u n1-return air-valve attached or provided upon theii'mer end of the plug'. An advantageous and simple construction of theatoresaid val veis a tunnelshaped or taper nozzle. 1T, with its apex pro truding' axially inward and provided with a normally closed aperture iS thereat, so formed as to admit air 'from the outside only when distended, while it is closed by the elasticity ot' the material, such as rubber, oi which it is formed. supplemented bythe surroumling IOO external pressure interiorly of the said tube. Until the contents of the barrel or other receptacle to which my invention is applied is to be withdrawn the orifice would be closed by a' cork or stopper 19.
To use the device, the sleeve 9 with the tube l2 and its aforesaid attachments are inserted in the socket and the washer 13 compressed, as before described. The joints being thus packed, the tube would be farther inserted to eject the stopper' 19, making the device operative.
Having described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isW
l. The combination, with the socket having' an opening' extending` therethrough which is formed with anintermediate chamber, the tube provided with a non-return valve, an elastic washer external of and carried by the said tube, and a sleeve loosely Fitted about the said tube, and means for forcing the said sleeve against thc said washer whereby the latter is compressed to form a packing between the said tube and the socket, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with the socket, and the sleeve, of the tube extending' axially therethrough, the plug' provided with an air-inlet, the taper-shaped apertured elastic nozzle on the inner end of the said plug', and the elastic washer carried on the external peripheral su rface of the said tube, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with a socket, a sleeve fitting in said socket, means for securing the sleeve in position in the socket and the washer located in the socket below the end of said sleeve, of a tube passing loosely through said socket and the said sleeve and embraced by said washer, a plug' seated in the end of said tube and a valve on said plug'.
In testimony whereof Iaiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
