PATENT OFFICE.
MANLEY J. OHAPLIN, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HERMAN RUTSCHOW, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
I'AYP FOR BEER-BARRELS.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of llietters- Patent No. 729,545, dated June 2, 1903 Applieationiiled January '7, `1.903.
To all whom it may concern;
Be itknown that LMANLEY J. CHAPLIN, a citizen of the UnitedStatesesidin g at Seattle, in the county of King and Stateef Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Taps for Beer-Barrels, of which the following is a specification, refer` ence being had therein tothe accompanying drawings. p Y
This invention has relation to improvements in beer-barrel taps; and it consists in the construction, novel arrangement, and adaptation of devices, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
The object of theinvention is the perfection of a tap for use on or with any beer-barrel. This object I accomplish by the means shown and illustrated in the accompanyingv drawings, in Whichp Y Figure l is a central longitudinal section through a barrel-tap embodying my inven- Fig. 2 is a similar view oflthe socket shown in Fig. 1 with the bung-stopper in place. Fig. Sis a view of Fig. 2, taken in the direction indicated by arrows y. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of part of the'draw-tube casing.
Referring tothesaid drawings, the letter A represents a bung-socket having an external screw-thread, as shown at et, for securing the same in the bulge or head H of the beer barrel or cask to which the invention is applied.- The socket is provided at one end with a contracted cylindrical opening b, for the'reeeption of a cork stopper s, and terminating inperipheral shoulder b'. The other end of the socket is formed with oppositely-arranged-V longitudinal slots C, which terminate inte! riorly of the socket in transverse obliqueshelves c. L Y
D indicates a cham bered casing, preferably made of twopartscd and d', integrally coupled by screw-threads c and a set-screw e. v`Ad-vA jacent to one end of the casing part-d' are latorally-projecting stndsf, adapted to be entered'into the aforesaid slots.
gis a circular offset, having at its periphery a downwardly-extending fiange g to provide an annular cavity h to receive a washer W.
d" denotes a bos's integral with the outer part d of the casing, in which is screwed a serai No. 138,116. (No modil) nipple z' for'making connection by a flexible pipe with the usual air-supply pump.
T is a cylindrical draw-tube, which is connected in any suitablevmanner with a faucet and is externally of. lessdiameter than the said contractedopening ofthe socket and also the reduced opening 7o ofgthe casing.
Under the last-named openingis a shoulder lo', against whichV is placed a packing ring or washerL for making a tight joint around the draw-tube. Interiorly ofV the casing is a sleeve M of greater internal diameter than is the said draw-tube and ofa length greaterl than the distance betweenthe socket-shoulder bA and the face Z of the Washer L when the casing studs f have. engaged the said shelves c'. '-7 Y N is a belt-channelv Asurrounding the 'said sleeve opposite to the air-inlet opening of boss d, to which communication is made with the inside of'the sleeve by apertures n, whereby air is admitted to the barrel.
. The operationof theinventiomwill now be described, reference Ybeing made to Fig. l. 75 The socket being supposed to'be inserted in l the bung-hole and closed bya stopper, (shown by broken lines,) the.casing containing the afore-described-sleeve and washers W and L is entered into the socket by passing the projecting studs f through the slots thereof and upon being partially rotated is caught by studs, and the said washers are slightly compressed. The drawtube is now inserted through the casing and its sleeve, dislodging fthe said stopper, and when in the required position the casing is rotated until stopped by one of the said studs being intercepted in its travel by a lug m, during which turningv the casing is obviously drawn into the socket, further compressing the washer W and through theinterposition of the sleeve the other washer, L, thus not only making non- ;leakable joints thereat, but also locking the IDO an opening extending therethrough which is reduced at one end and terminates at a shoulder b intermediate said opening, oppositelyarranged longitudinal slots at the other end of socket terminating in oblique shelves internal of the socket, a casing having external projecting studs adapted to be entered said slots and provided with a cylindrical chamber having a shoulder 7c' at its outer end, an external off-set cavity 7L surrounding said casing, a perforated sleeve of greater internal diameter than the said tube and extending from the shoulder b' of the socket to within a short distance of the chamber end 7c of the casing, and communicative connection between the said perforations of the sleeve and a source of air-supply, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a device of the character set forth, the combination with a draw-tu be, a bung-socket provided with an internal shoulder intermediate its length, a casing adapted to be entered said socket and means for drawing the same into and engaging with the said socket by rotating the casing, and communicative connection between the inside of said casing and the source of air-supply; of an annular Washer external of and carried by the casing and adapted to bear against the said socket, a Washer positioned at the outer end of the chamber of the casing, and a sleeve extending from, outside the inner end of the casing to the last-named washer, whereby it is compressed simultaneously with the other washer and the coupling of the casing with socket, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with the socket, a chambered casing provided with an air-inlet, a drawtube extending axially through said casing and said socket; of a perforated sleeve surrounding said tube so as to provide an annular passage therebetween the entire length of the sleeve, said sleeve extending from outside the inner end of the casing to Within a short distance from the shoulder at the outer end of the chamber of said casing, and communication between said passage and the said airinlet of the casing, substantiallyas described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MANLEY J. CIIAPLIN.
