SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 783,488, dated February 28, 1905.
Application filed May 23,1904. Serial No. 209,168.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN J. WEINMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Day ton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Can-Body Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in can-body machines.
The invention, more specifically speaking, relates to the formers which close the blank or tin around the horn and to means for holding the blank in position while the edges are being crimped and to means for holding the blank against the under side of the horn while the formers are embracing said horn in the formation of a can-body. The various other features of the can-body machine are well known and require no extended detail description or illustration.
The features of the present invention are improvements over the can-body machine shown and described in my pending application, Serial No. 109,082, iiled May 26, 1902.
Preceding a more detailed description of the invention reference is made to the accompanying drawings, of which Figure 1 is aside elevation of. a body-former in which my improvements are contained. Fig. 22 a front elevation. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation showing the means for clam ping a crimped blank against the under side of the horn and the means for clam ping a blank in a position to be crimped prior to its movement below the horn. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of the holding-clamps which secure the blanks during the operation of crimping the same.

The framework of the machine comprises lower side frames 1, upper side frames 2, a table 3, interposed between said upper and lower frames, a rear shelf i, and a cap 5. The main power-shaft 6 is suitably mounted in hearings in the lower frame, and from said shaft power is transmitted to a cam-shaft 7 through gearing 8 and 9. Upon shaft 7 there are mounted a series of cams 6 8 9. (Jam 6 actuates pitman 40, through which the tog gle-plate receives the necessary movement to raise and lower the hammer 42. The pitman is connected to said toggle-plate by adjustable connection 39. The block 41 has a pivotal connection \vitl'rthe lower portion of said toggle-plate 35, and in said block the hammer 4.2 is secured. One corner of the toggle-plate 35 is connected with a reversinglink 36, which is pivoted to a bracket 38, secured to the upper cross-piece The cam 9 imparts motion to lever 4%, which in turn reciprocates the carriage 45. upon which the blanks for the can-bodies are conveyed. The cam 8 transmits movement through suitable mechanism to the lower member of the erinnJing-dies, which operate in a well known manner and require no detail description. The only one of these cams that requires special mention is that designated by the numeral 9. which has a cam-reeess in the face thereof which re ceives a roll-stud on pitman 10. 11 designates a vertically-reciprocating slide or head which is movable by said pitman in guides 12, said pitman being slotted and having a connection with the central portion 13 of said head.
14 designates two upright standards which move in openings in the table and are rigidly mounted on the head 11. These stamlards have pivoted to their upper ends formers 15, which are in a position to close the blank or tin 15', from which the can-body is formed, around the cylindrical horn 16 in the upward movement of the standards. These formers are free from any guides and are so mounted that in their upward movements the inner ends 17 thereof making contact with the lower sides of the horn will readily close around said horn in the continued movement of their so pporting-standards.
Referring to further features involved in the present invention, 18 designates a cam on the cam-shaft 7, which actuates a pitman 19.
On the upper end of this pitman there is a rack 20, which engages a pinion 21 on the outer end of a shaft 22, which is mounted in suitable bearings on the table 3. On the other end of the shaft 22 there is another pinion, 23, which engages a rack 24. The latter rack is a portion of a cam-bar 25, the upper surface of which is tapered. as at 26, and engages a corresponding lower tapering surface of a cam-block 27 to raise said block to clamp the tin 15 against the under side of the horn to hold said blank while the formers 15 are closing it around said horn. Hinged at 28 to the inner end of the cam-bar 25 is a second cam-bar 29, having a tapering surface 30, which engages a corresponding lower surface of a clamp-post 31, which has upon its upper end a spring-bar 32, which clamps and holds the blanks in position against a head 33, said blank being so held during the operation of crimping the edges of the same preparatory to their advancement to a position below the horn. The clamping-post 31 is supported in a guide 34:, which is rigidly mounted on the arm 3.
The horn 16 is secured to a vertical dovetail slide H by means of a connection 43 and has movement through said slide &4, the latter being inclosed in guideways 45. (See Fig. 2.)
Having described my invention, l claim 1. In a can-body machine, the combination with a horn, of a clamp-block located below said horn and adapted to clamp a blank against said horn prior to the operation of forming a body, said clamp-block having its lower surface tapered, a cam-bar having its upper surface tapered to match the surface of the clampblock, means interposed between the powershaft and said cam-bar for actuating the same to raise and lower the clamp-block, folders adapted to inclose a blank around the horn which said folders are pivoted, the pivotal point of said folders being nearer the inner ends thereof so that in the elevation of said folders, the inner ends will make first contact with the lower sides of the horn and said fold: ers will thus be caused to close around the sides of the horn in the continued elevation, substantially as set forth.
2. In a can-body machine, the combination with a horn, of a clamp-block below said horn adapted to hold a blank in rigid contact with the lower side of the horn during the formation of a body from said blank, said clampblock having its lower surface taperedfrom end to end, acam-bar below said clamp-block and having a portion of its upper surface tapered to engage the tapered surface of the clamp-block, a rack on one end of said cambar, and means interposed between said rack and the cam-shaft for imparting the necessary movements to said cam-bar, substantially as set forth.
3. In a can-body machine, the combination with a horn around which the body is formed, of a clampblock located below the horn and adapted to clamp each blank against the lower side of said horn, a spring-clamp located below the seaming mechanism and adapted to hold a blank in position for said crimping operation, cam-bars having a pivotal connection, said cam-bars having upper tapered surfaces adapted to engage said clamp-blocks to elevate the same simultaneously to hold a blank in position to be crimped and to hold a crimped blank in position against the horn, and means for actuating said cam-bars, substantially as set forth.
