MACHINE FOR DOUBLE-SEAMING TIN ROOFING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 322,848, dated July 21, 1885.

in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a machine designed to form the so-called standing lock on the seams of tin roofing; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the claims.
The invention is fully illustrated in the annexed drawings, wherein Figures I and II are respectively side and front elevations of my improved machine for double seaming tin roofing, or forming the so-called standing lock 011 the same. ,Fig. III is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 1V is a horizontal section on line a: 00, Fig. I. Fig. V is an enlarged inverted plan view. Fig. VI is a transverse section on line y 3 Fig. V. Fig. VII is a transverse section on linez 2, Fig. VI. Figs. VIII and IX are longitudinal vertical sections of the box which carries the folders and show the opposing faces of the latter. Figs. X, XI, and XII are transverse sections taken, respectively, on lines 1 1, 2 2, and 3 3, Fig. V. Figs. XIII and XIV are opposite end views of the folding devices, and Fig. XV is a detail view illustrating the operation of the compressingrollers in completing the standing lock or double seam on the tin roofing.

A represents the frame, to which the mechanisms of my machine are attached, said frame consisting of two sills on which are erected two standards,which are connected with each other by a cap on their upper end. This frame is mounted on carrying-rollers B B, pivoted to the end portions of the sills of the frame in any suitable manner. The inner sides of the aforesaid sills are provided with vertical dovetailed guide-grooves i i, in which slides a box, H, said box being sustained adjustably toward and from the base of the frame by a bridge, Z, attached to the top of the sills of the frame A and spanning the box H, and an adjusting-screw,m,extending throughsaid bridge (No model.)
and connected with the box H by a swiveljoint. In a central longitudinal recess in the under side of the box H are seated the folders O 0, consisting of jaws placed opposite each other and having in their adjacent sides winding-ledges h h, extending part way the length of the jaws'and provided with thin rollers or rotary disks n n, which project with a portion of their respective peripheries over the ledges, the ledges and rollers of one jaw being disposed conversely in relation to the position of those of the other jaw, said jaws being designed to bend the edge of the wider flange of the tin over the edge of the narrower flange preparatory to clinching the former on the latter, as hereinafter more fully explained. In order to allow the aforesaid folders O O to acccommodate themselves to the increased thicknesses of tin at the so-called cross-seams thereof, I arrange the jaw O yieldingly in its position, by mounting it loosely on the jaw and providing it with transverse grooves o 0, into which project vertically guide-pins 0, firmly attached to the box H, and between the back of said jaw and inner wall of the box I f place a'block, O, and between this block and the jaw I interpose elastic cushions r 1'. Back of the block 0 is an eccentric or cam, s, pivoted in the wall of the box H, the pivoting pin of which eccentric or cam projects through the top of the box and has a lever, 15, affixed to its end for turning said eccentric or cam so as to cause it to press more or less against the block 0, and thus sustain the jaw O in its operative position, the elastic cushion 7' '1', allowing the jaw to yield sufficiently to accommodate itself to the increased thicknesses of tin at the cross-seams thereof, as aforesaid.

One of said boxes is adjustably sustained in its position by a set-screw, 7), extended through the end of the plate A, and bearing against the box. The other box is held yieldingly in its position by means of a spring, 0, attached to the exterior of the frame A, and provided with a push-pin, c, by which it presses against the box. To regulate the tension of this spring, I pivot on the end of the frame A, or on some other suitable part thereof, alever, d, one end of which is connected with the end of the spring a by a rod, 6. At the side of said lever is a ratchet, f, and on the lever is pivoted a dog, 9, engaging said ratchet, and thereby holding To the shafts R R D, and between said gears is a double miter gear-whee], F, attached to a shaft, E, extended across the frame A, and journaled in suitable bearings thereon, and having connected to its two extremities cranks G G, by which to impart rotary motion to the shaft E, the gears F D D serving to transmit said motion to one of the set of rollers R R. The other'set of rollers, which are at the opposite end of the folder 0 0, receive rotary motion by sprocket-wheels II. On one of the shafts of each set of rollers is a drive-chain, '0, connected with said sprocketwheels, and gear-wheels L L on said shafts meshing in each other.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The tin, previously flanged, is placed on the roof with the flanges of the successive strips of tin adjacent to each other. Then the Within-described machine is placed astride the aforesaid flanges of the tin, and the levers d d at the ends of the machine are to be depressed to bring the compressing-rollers B R to bear against opposite sides of the two flanges of the tin to be joined, one of said flanges being wider than the other, so as to project above the same. The box H is also to be adjusted, by means of the screw m, to bring the jaws O O in position to receive the flanges of the tin between them. Then by turning the cranks G G the frictional hold of the rotary rollers R R on the flanges of the tin causes the machine to be propelled, and

illustrated in Fig. XV of the drawings. It will be observed that the rollers R R perform two functionsviz., to propel the machine and at the same time compress the seam of the tin. The inclination of the rollers holding the machine down to its work allows said machine to be operated on the vertical side of a building as well as on roofs of any inclination.
Having described my in vention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In combination with the frame A, compressing-rollers R It, and their shafts R It, the sliding boxes a a, set screw b, for adj ustably sustaining one of said boxes, and the spring 0 and push-pin c, yieldingly sustaining the other of said boxes, substantially as described and shown.
2. In combination with the frame A, COYII- pressingrollers R R, and their shafts R R, the sliding boxes a a, set-screw b, spring 0, provided with the push-pin c, the lever. (1, rod 6, connecting said lever with the free end of the spring a, and the ratchetf and dog 9, for retaining said lever in its position, substantially as described and shown.
3. In a machine for double-seaming tin roofing, the combination, with the frame A, of the carrying-rollers B B, folders 00, compressing-rollers R R, shafts R R, miter-gears D D, attached to said shafts, the shaft E, and the double mitergear F, and cranks G G, attached to shaft E, substantially as described and shown.
4. In combination with the frame A, the box H, the folder-jaw O, secured stationary in said box, and the folder-jaw 0, connected with said box yieldingly to accommodate itself to the increased thicknesses of the tin at the cross-seam thereof, substantially as set forth.
5. The within-described folder, consisting of the jaws O O,arranged opposite each other and having in their adjacent faces the winding-ledges h h, extending part way the length thereof, and rollers n n, projecting with a portion of their peripheries from the face of the jaws and over the ledges h h, the ledges and rollers of one jaw being disposed conversely in relation to the position of those of the other jaw, substantially as described and shown.
6. In combination with the frame A, mounted on carrying'rollers B B,and provided with the guide-grooves i i, the box H, sliding in said guide-grooves, foder-jaws O O,connected to said box, the bridge Z, attached to the frame and spanning the box, and the adj ustingscrew m, connecting the box with the bridge, substantially as described and shown.
