CHARLES AMON, OF CLEVELAN I), OIIIO.
VEGETABLE-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 7811985, dated February 7, 1905. Application filed May 18, 1904. Serial No. 208,541.
To all III/1071b if may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES AMoN, a citizen of the United States, residingat Cleveland, in the county of (uyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in YegetableCutters; and I do declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a vegetable-cutter; and the invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, substantially as shown and described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanyingdrawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional elevation of the cutter, and Fig. is a vertical sectional elevation at right angles to Fig. l and showing especially the means for driving the cutter. Fig. 3 is a plan view ona line corresponding to .r ;r, Fig. 1.
As thus shown, the invention consists in a vegetable-cutter somewhat of the nature of a machine in which there are a set of rotatable cutting-blades and means for rotating the blades, as will now appear.
B represents the base of the machine, and t the casing, removably supported upon the lateral flanges b of the base by the swingnuts w, engaging the flange of the casing upon the flange of the base and firmly fixing the same thereupon while the cutter is in use. The base B has an arm B, adapted to come beneath the edge of the table and to be tastened thereto by screw 1/ in a well-known way.
l) represents a rotatable ring-gear which is housed beneath the outwardly and downwardly inclined base-flange (2 of easing C and under which the said ring is rotatably supported upon ball-bearings 2 on base B and provided with a side ball race or bearing 3, and another race-ball 4 near its outer edge, so as to relieve friction and afford as free rotation possible for the said ring. The teeth of the said ring are along its top and are engaged by the drive-gear Gr, having a handle and supported upon a spindle I in the arm 5 from casing C. The said gear-ring .D has an inwardly-projecting flange or ears 6 about its bottom, which runs in beneath the edgcot' casing C, and secured thereon are two platesections 7 and 8. Each of these sections or plates carries a cutter or blade 9. which together compass the entire width of the. said plates or the bottom of the casing, and one cutter practically is a prolongation of the other, as seen in Fig. I). The plates 7 and 8 are each provided with a special drop portion along their inner edges corresponding to the blade 9 supported thereon, and the said drop portions have outer edges 10, across which the edges of the blades are adapted to extend relatively, seen in Fig. l, and it is across these edges that the adjustment of the blades is effected to give the edge more or less clevation to cut liner or coarser, as the case may be. To this end each blade is provided with two screws 11, as herein shown, and about each screw there is a spring 12, adapted to bear up against the blade and hold it in working po sition, so far as its elevation is concerned. The opposite edge of each blade from its cutting edge is free to drop and rise under adjustment, but is held up by the spring 12 and is not otherwise limited in its up-and-down movement. This construction leaves the plates 7 and 8 or blades 9 as at least temporary fixtures upon and with the gem-wing I), and by releasing the nuts on screws C and swinging them laterally the entire casing and all that is connected with it can be lifted ofl'.
F is the follower to rest upon the vegetable. whatever it may be, and 13 represents a spring housed in the cover II, which is pivoted at /1 upon the casing and provided with the lower half l-L ot' a handle. The upper hall 15 ot' the handle forms part of a crankarm J. pivoted at '16 on the cover and connected with the follower F by means of a short rod 18. A catch or a dog 19, pivoted on casing C, engages through a slot in or upon the. cover H and which holds the said cover firmly down upon the casing, and a catch or dog 20, pivoted in the lower handle portion 1- engages a lip on the upper handle portion 15 and holds it rigid with the portion H as long as engaged. In this way the follower F can be held up against this spring tension and the 'cover and all can be thrown back and another vegetable placed in the casing to be worked upon. Then the cover is lowered again and the catch 19 springs into position and catch 20 is released, so as to give the spring 13 freedom to act, and then the machine is ready again for use. The bottom of follower F is studded with sharp projections to engage the vegetable and prevent its turning during operation.
What I claim is 1. In a vegetable-cutter, a base provide with a circular lateral flange about its top, in combination with a vegetable-receiving casing removably supported upon said base and provided with an inclined annular flange 0 projecting from its side above its lower edge and terminating on the same plane with said edge. a rotatable gear-ring supported between said inclined flange c and said base and having teeth on its top, a hand driven wheel meshing with said gear-ring to drive the same. means detachably fixing said casing upon said base and confining said ring in working position, the said ring having an inwardly-extending flange 6 beneath the main casing and cutters supported from said flange in the bottom of the casing, substantially as described.
2. The base having a lateral flange babout the top thereof, in combination with the main casing havlng an outwardly and downwardly inclined flan e 0 overla in said base-flan e, J
b b b and means to fasten said parts together, a gear-ring between said inclined flange and base having an inwardly-extending flange 6 entering within the main casing at its bottom. separate plates fixed to rotate with the said flange and a cutter-blade adjustably secured upon the inner edge of each of said plates, substantially as described.
3. In a vegetable-cutter, a suitable casing to contain the vegetable and a cover thereon, a follower within said cover and a spring to press the follower down, a pivoted crank-arm having link connection with said follower and the said arm and the said cover having each a part of a handle and a catch to lock said handle parts together, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES AMON.
