POTATO-CUTTER SEECIFICATION fOIming part of Letters Patent No. 781,911, dated February '7, 1905.
Application filed June 29,1904. Serial No. 214,607.
.77) I! whom if may concern.-
be it known that l, ERNSTR. SCHLICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Potato-Cutters: and I do hereby dcclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to anovel construction in a device for cutting potatoes in a fanciful form. the object being to provide a device of this character by means of which a potato may be cut to form a substantially continuous spiral shaving which is further laterally corrugated; and it consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanyingdrawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 shows my device in side elevation in position in a potato which is being cut. Fig. 2. is a top plan view of same. Fig. 3 is a detail vertical section of same on the line 3 of Fig. 2.
My said device comprises a rod A, the lower end of which is screw-threaded, as at B, and which is provided at a point where the said scrmv-threznls begin with a horizontal arm (I, which is tapered and provided with a sharp edge 1), forming the cutting edge thereof. At its free end said arm C is bent to form a hook or handle E, which extends in the direction opposite to the cutting edge of said arm. The said arm or knife,as it may be termed, is laterally corrugated between its ends or may be formed to produce other shapes, in the manner of a molding-knife. The said arm or knife U is set at an incline so that the lower face thereof is parallel with the threads B. The knife 0 is made of sufficient length so that the flat portions beyond the corrugations may be given a one-quarter twist, and thus the outer end thereof is disposed so as to form the hook-shaped handle it. Such construction greatly facilitates and cheapens the cost of manufacture.
The operation of my said device is as follows: The potato is first pared, and the threaded portion B of the rod is then inserted in about the middle of said potato, and as soon as same is entirely or substantially entirelyembedded in the potato the latter is grasped in one hand and the index-linger of the other hand is placed in said hook and said arm and rod revolved thereby. Owing to its incline, the said arm or knife will obviously cut spirally through the potato, thereby producing a spiral shaving which is laterally corrugated or otherwise fancifully shaped. Such corrugation or fanciful shapingof such shaving has the effect of causing such shaving to assume very peculiar forms when being cooked and, furthermore, by increasing the surface subjected to the heat becomes more readily crisped, thus forming a delicious and ornamental dish for the table.
I claim as my invention A device of the kind specified comprising a rod screw-tlu'eaded at its lower end, a laterallydisposed cutter integral with said rod at a point adjacent the upper end of said threaded portion, said cutter being set at an incline corresponding to the inclination of the threads of said rod, and being laterally fluted or corrugated between its ends, said cutter being given a one-quarter twist intermediate its ends to form a hook on the free end of said arm disposed in a direction opposite to the cutting edge and serving as a means for turning said cutter and said rod.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name in presence of two subscribingwitnesses.
ERNST R. SGHLICK.
