PATENT OEEIcE.
JOHN J. BENSON, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
DISH.
SPECIFICATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 781,709, dated February 7,1905.
Application filed November 25,1902. Serial No. 132,726.
To 1/. Ill/0011b it 11mg concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J.BENsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of \Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dishes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
1 he invention has particular reference to a childs dish; and it consists, essentially, in the novel and simple construction thereof whereby the child is enabled to feed itself without spilling the food from the dish and the use of the spoon or fork is facilitated.
In the drawings illustrating the invention, Figure l is a perspective view of the dish or plate, and Fig. 2 is a sectional perspective view of a portion thereof.
In construction the dish comprises a flat base-section A, of crockery, china, or any suitable material. Upon the upper side of the base and integral therewith is formed the preferably annular flange B, inclosing the central section O of the base and rounded in configuration, so as to overhang said central portion. The dish-center is depressed in the manner indicated, so that a considerable quantity of food may be placed therein. Extending about the periphery of the base-section is an annular flange D, spaced from the inner flange B and forming in connection therewith a channel E.
The inner flange B described serves as an abutment against which the spoon or fork is adapted, to strike and in overhanging, as described, it forms a means of pushing the food into the spoon when the latter is brought into contact therewith. The channel about the inner flange is adapted to catch and retain any of the particles of food that may accidentally be forced over the inner flange, and thus prevent the material in the dish from falling on the table.
It will be observed from the construction of the dish that it may be formed in a single piece and manufactured at very slight cost.
\Vhile the particular formation of the flanged dish has been set forth I do not desire to be limited to the same, as it is obvious that different forms of flanges could be employed without in any manner departing from the spirit of my invention.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is- A childs dish having a depressed central portion and a base provided with a continuous flat bottom surface extending outwardly to the extreme outer edge of the dish, a marginal flange integral with and extending upwardly at substantially right angles to the outer edge of said flat bottom surface, and a supplemental flange upon the upper surface of the base inclosing and overhanging said depressed central portion.
.ln testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN J. BENSON.
