GEORGE O. \VALKER, OF \VALKER, OREGON.
DRAG-SAW MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 781,700, dated February 7, 1905.
Application filed October 14, 1904. Serial No. 228,461.
To all whom it 'I)I//I/ 7/ concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE O. \VALKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Valker,county of Lane, and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drag-Saw Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to portable drag-saw machines, and more particularly to the apparatus for operating them.
lieretofore in sawing a log after it has fallen from the stump it has been necessary to move the power or engine with the portable dragsaw as the latter is moved along the length of the log to make the successive cuts which saw up the log into short blocks.
The object of the present invention is to provide novel means for operating the portable drag-saw from the engine or power so that the power may remain stationary at all times, though the drag-saw is moved lengthwise of the log to make the successive cuts; and the invention also aims to provide an improved arrangement of pulleys or sheaves on the drag-saw to effect this object.
The invention consists in the novel features and combinations appearing more fully hereinafter and recited in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view illustrating the apparatus and its manner of use; Fig. 2, a rear view looking toward the log; Fig. 3, a rear elevation of the machine; Fig. l, a detail plan view of the improved pulley arrangement.
Referring lirst to Figs 3 and l, the machine has a four-wheeled truck 1, which carries a frame 2, in the upper part of which journaled a large cable-sheave 3, whose plane extends transversely of the truck. The d rag-saw 3 may be mounted in the usual manner, so as to fall as the saw-cut deepens, and operated from sheave 3 by crank 3", pitrnan 3', and clutch 2. .lournaled on stub-shafts a and 5, secured to the frame at the lower and side portion thereof, are small sheaves 6 and 7, the former lying at an angle nearly approximating the vertical and the latter being disposed in a plane nearly approximating the horizontal, it being understood that these sheaves are tangentially disposed relative to the sheave 3.
Reference being had to Figs. 1 and 2, the manner of use of the invention will be understood. The numeral 8 represents the fallen log out from the stump 9 and which it is desired to saw up into short blocks. The traction-engine or other power 'lOis stationed adjacent one end of the log 8, and a vertical sheave 11 is mounted on any suitable support 12, (at the time of sawing or previously on a regular standard.) A cable 13 is then passed around the drum 14 of the engine and one strand led direct to sheave 11. The balance of the cable is then passed around sheaves 6 and 7 and around sheave 3. The rotation of drum 1% turns sheave 3 and reciprocates the drag-saw 3'. After the cut has been made the truck 1 is wheeled to another position, (the engine 11') meanwhile remaining in its former position,) as shown by dotted lines, Fig. 1, without stopping the engine 10 and positioned where desired to make the succeeding cut, this method of sawing being carried on, starting with one end of the log, until the entirelog is sawed up into short blocks.
A very great saving of time and labor is obtained by using my apparatus for operating the drag-saw, as in the old way the engine has to be moved each ti1ne the drag-saw is moved to make a succeeding cut.
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--- 1. A portable sawing-machine mounted to travel in a line substantially at right angles to the cutting plane of the saw to make successive cuts, and comprising a saw, and a saw-operating sheave, in combination with two sheaves and means for power-driving one of them, and an operating-cable passing about such sheaves, said cable being arranged in a line substantially parallel to the path in which the sawing-machine adapted to travel to make successive cuts, and said c: ble being carried around the saw-operating sheaves.
2. A portable sawing-machine mounted to travel in a line substantially at right angles to the cutting plane of the saw to make successive cuts, and comprising a saw, and a mg-machine is adapted to travel to make suc- IO saw-operatingsheave, in combination with cessive cuts, and said cable being carried two sheaves and means for power-driving one around the saw-operating sheave.
