GARRIT'I M. VAN RIPER,
OF BODIE, CALIFORNIA.
BAND SAWING MACHINE.
srEcriEIcArrIoN forming part of Letters Patent No. 223,964, dated January 2'7, 1880.
- Application filed September 5, 1879.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, GARRITCL M. VAN RIPER, of Bodie, in the county of Mono and State of California, have invented a new and Improved 5 Sawing-Machine, of which the following is a specification.
My improvements relate to sawing machines for cross-cutting; and the invention consists in a band-saw working on pulleys that are fit- Io ted movably on vertical shafts, whereby the saw can be moved downward to out from the log two blocks at once.
The construction and operation of the machine will be. described with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a plan view of a sawingmachine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate. corresponding parts.
A is the railway for the log-cairiage B, upon which carriage one end of the log rests, while s the other end is supported by the conical rolles of the shaft a, by means of which the log is moved forward to the saw as required.
In a suitable frame-work at opposite sides of the railway are fitted vertical shafts O (1, which have upon their upper ends pulleys I) for abelt, c, passing around thepulleys to conso meet the shafts, and upon one shaft, 0, is a pulley, l, to which the driving power of the saw will be applied.
Upon each shaft 0 is a pulley, d, which is caused to turn with its shaft by a lug or feather, or by other desired means, which permit movement of the pulley endwisc of its shaft. Each pulley d is formed with a hub portion having a circumferential groove, in which enters the forked end of a yoke, e, that is suspended from a lever, f, and moves in a fixed guide, g. By means of lever f and the yoke e the pulleys d can be simultaneously raised and lowered while the machine is in operation, the band-saw h, which passes around pulleys d, being thereby also raised, to permit 5 adjustment of the log beneath, and lowered gradually as the cutting progresses. Two blocks may be cut from the log at once, and a suitable clamp or dog (not shown) will be used to hold the blocks in place while the saw is being raised from the cut.
I have shown a worm-shaft, i, that is to be driven continuously, supported by a lever, k, for throwing the worm in or out of contact with the wheel on shaft a, whereby the log and carriage B may be moved forward, as desired.
I do not limit myself to this arrangement, nor to the details of construction otherwise, as they may be varied without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a sawing-machine, the combination, with the log supports and carriage, of the vertical shafts G, pulleys d, yoke e, lever f, and band-saw h, substantially as described and shown, and for the purposes set forth.
2. In sawing-machines, the band-saw h and its pulleys (I, combined with the driving-shafts, on which the pulleys are fitted for vertical movement simultaneously by the means substantially as described and shown, and for the purposes set forth.
3. In sawing-machines, the vertical shafts O, pulleys d, yoke e, lever f, and band-saw h, combined for operating substantially as 'described and shown, and for the purposes specified.
GARRITT MEAD VAN RIPER.
