BOBBlN-DRIVING MEANS FOR ROTATABLE SPINDLES.
I SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 781,640, dated February '7, 1905.

Be it known that 1, GEORGE Oris DRArniz, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of llopedale, county of 'orcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in .Bobbin-Driving Means for Rotatable Spindies, of which the 'following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
ln centrifugally acting bobbin driving means for rotatable spindles the bobbin is engaged and driven with the spindle by ori through the medium of radially-movable and loosely-connected clutch members rotatable with the spindle, the centrifugal Aforce causing said members to lirmly engage the chambei' in the head of the bobbin. Such apparatus is very eflicient and permits the easy removal of the bobbin or its application to the spindle while the latter is running at speed, as the clutch members aie readily pushed inward temporarily at such time; but owing' to the character of the driving means the bobbinhead will sometimes move laterally under an unbalanced load. This slight movement causes undesirable vibration and tends to affect undesirably the proper operation of the apparatus.
My present invention relates to the type of spindle apparatus hcreinbefore referred to; and it has for its object the production of novel means for overcoming the objection just noted, while at the same time providing a vcrtical support or rest for the bobbin when applied to the spindle.
ln accordance with my invention the spindle is provided with a. bobbin-rest having a flared or inclined surface so constructed and arranged that it will be substantially tangential to the lower end of the bobbin, and while vertically supporting the same side movement or vibration of the head of the bobbin is prevented without any possibility of a tight fit between the bobbin and the rest. Thus the bobbin may vary considerably in diameter, owingl to Changes in the humidity of the atmosphere, dampness of the yarn, or variations in temperature, without interfering with the proper operation of the apparatus.
The various novel features of my invention will be fully described in the subjoined specilication and particularly pointed out in the following claims.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a rotatable spindle of the centrifugally-acting clutch type with one embodiment of my invention applied thereto; and Fig. Q shows the bobbini'est and lateral guard broken out and in section, the lower end or headof a bobbin being shown in operative position on the spindle.
inasmuch as the centrifugally-acting bobbin-clutcli or driving means forms no part of my invention ym' w, such means may be of any well-known form, and herein l have illustrated the same as that shown and described in United States Patent No. 772,599, dated October 18, 1901.
The spindle A. whirl W', having an upturned sleeve w, by which it is rigidly secured to the spindle, the centrifugally-acting clutch members 8, and the retaining-lips T thereon may be and are all substantially as in said patent and operate as therein set forth. [n the pressent embodiment of my invention the head fu" of the sleeve wf has an upturned cup-like portion 1 surrounding the lower ends of the clutching members, the inner face 2 of said portion 1 being' made inversely frusto-conical-that is, it presents an annular upwardly and outwardly flared surface concentric with the spindle, the angle of inclination being such that the face 2 will always be substantially tangential to the lower end bx of the head of the bobbin B, Fig. 2. From an inspection of Fig. 2 it will be seen that while the bobbin is thus supported vertically by the iny clined Aface 2 it is also restrained thereby from lateral movement r vibration. There can never be any tight or holding lit between the bobbin and the rest, owing to thc augularity of the latter, the bobbin-rest having no function whatever in driving the bobbin with the Iiurtherniore, the slight changes in spindle.
the size of the bobbin, due to shrinkage or swelling, have no effect on the efficacy of the ibobbin-rest, for the bobbin will be supported thereon a little higher or a little lower, according to the increase or decrease in the bobbin diameter at its butt. As a matter of fact, while such change in diameter would interfere materially with the proper fit in a cupdriving device it actually makes but little difference in the vertical height of the bobbin with my present invention. The bobbin will always bottom on the inclined face 2 and without possibility of wedging or binding, the centrifugallyacting clutching means effecting the sole driving engagement with the bobbin within the chamber b thereof, Fig. 2.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination with a rotatable spindle provided with centrifugally-acting bobbinclutching means to engage and drive the bobbin, of a bobbin-rest rigidly attached to the spindle and having an annular aring face to engage the lower end of the bobbin substantially tangential thereto.
2. The combination with a rotatable spindle provided with centrifugally-acting bobbinclutching means to engage and drive the bobbin, of the cup-like bobbin-rest attached to the spindle and surrounding the lower end of the clutching means, and having a flaring face to form an annular seat for and substantially tangential to the lower end of the bobbin while preventing lateral movement thereof.
3. The combination with a rotatable spindle provided with centrifugally-acting bobbinclutching means to internally engage the head of and drive the bobbin, of an attached bobbin-rest upwardly fiared to contact externally with the lower end of the bobbin and vertically support the same while preventing lateral vibration thereof.
4. The combination with a rotatable spindle provided with centrifugally-acting bobbinclutching means to internally engage and drive the bobbin, a whirl, and a sleeve rigidly attaching it to the spindle, of an inverted frustoconical bobbin-rest on the sleeve to loosely receive and vertically support and prevent lateral movement of the bobbin-head.
5. The combination with a rotatable spindle provided with centrifugally-acting bobbinclutching means to engage and drive the bobbin, of a bobbin-rest attached to the spindle and having a frusto-conical face to engage the lower end of the bobbin substantially tangential thereto.
