SPECIFICATION forming/part of Letters Patent No. 781,084,y dated January-31, 1905.
Application led .Time 12,1902. Serial No. 111,388.
To all whom t may concer-n.5
Be it known that I, THOMAS MCCLUNIE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and Stateof Conneeticuuhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuspidors, of which the following is a specication.
The object of my invention is to provide a device of the class specified which is of pleasing appearance and of thoroughly sanitary construction.
In the accompanying drawing I have illustrated in a single perspective view my improved cuspidor, a portion of the igure being broken away to show the construction and arrangement of certain parts of the mechanism, which will be hereinafter described.
In the drawing, A ldenotes the body of the box. It is provided with the outside cover D, hinged to the upper edges thereof. Within the'box A is intended to be placed a receptaele, (not shown,) such as the spittoon or cuspidor. v
As shown in the drawing, the cover D extends beyond the point at which it is hinged to the box, as at d. To these projections is secured a chain loop H; A rod K has secured to its lower end a spring 7a, which at its upper end is hook-shaped, as at c, to engage the chain loop H. A guide-tube N is secured to the box, and in it moves the lower end of this rod K. The upper part of the rod K passes through the arched metallic strip M, in which wish to limit myself to the exact construc- "tions herein shown and described.
` l claim as my invention- The combination with the box and the lid pivoted thereto and' formed with projecting portions extending beyond the box, and the tube secured to the box and having a rod therein, of a loop connected to the said projecting portions of the lid by its ends, a spring surrounding said rod and connected to an intermediate portion of said loop, and an arched strip secured by its ends to the box, the upper end of the rod passing through said strips and guided therebsaid spring being movable with the rod and attached thereto at its lower end, the upper end of the spring being secured to the loop and unconnected to the rod.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS MCCLUNIE.
