PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK D. PALMER, OF JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA.
FILTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 781,018, dated January 31, 1905.
Application filed July 30, 1904. Serial No. 218,905.
To a whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK D.PALMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at J acksonville, in the county of Duval and State of Florida, have invented a new and useful Filter, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to filters designed especially for handling liquids"such as alcohol, ether, and the like-which rapidly evaporate when exposed to the atmosphere, and has for its objects to produce a comparatively simple inexpensive device of this character in which the material under treatment may be thoroughly protected from the atmosphere and be rapidly and effectually filtered.
To these ends the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional elevation of a filter embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the member or core for supporting the filtering-paper. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of said core Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a Vessel or receptacle, preferably composed of glass and of the form shown and having applied around its ends externallythreaded strengthening bands or rings 2 of brass or other suitable material cemented to the glass receptacle, there being screwed onto the lower ring 2 a metal retaining member or annulus 3 and onto the upper ring 2 a main cap or closure 4:, having a central inlet-opening 5, normally closed by an auxiliary cap 6, which in turn has a central opening or perforation normally closed by an air-valve 7.
As a filtering medium 1 preferably employ a sheet of filtering-paper 8, which in practice is folded in the formof a funnel or cornucopia and seated over a conical supporting member or core 9, which in turn seats at its lower end in the concaved upper face of a stopper or closure 10, which forms a part of the core 9 and whichis designed to fit in the normally lower end of the receptacle 1 and to be secured in place by the retaining member or annulus 3, the stopper being preferably of the form shown and having throughout a portion of its length inclined walls which are practically continuand thence from the vessel.
ous with the inclined walls of the conical core, while the vessel is internally reduced, as at 11, and has the walls of its reduced portion nels 13, which communicate respectively with and are in fact continuations of the channels 12, while the stopper has formed centrally therethrough a discharge opening or passage 14L with which the channels 13 in turn cornmunicate. v
In practice after the core 9, having thereon the filtering-paper 8, is seated in place upon the stopper 10 the latter is inserted to position within the lower end of the receptacle 1 and secured in place by the clamping-ring 3. Thus the lower portion of the paper funnel 8 surrounds and is clamped between the outer face of the stopper and the correspondinglytapered face of the vessel. The liquid to be filtered is then introduced into the receptacle through the opening. 5, and after filtering through the paper 8 flows through the channels 12 and 13 to the discharge-opening 1 1 In some instances the core 9 may be dispensed with and the paper applied directly over the stopper 10,
and thus allowed to percolate through the paper, and during this latter and the filtering operation air may be permitted to enter or be excluded from the vessel 1 by means of the valve 7 thereby controlling the speed of filtration of the liquid.
It is to be understood that in attainingv the ends herein set forth I do not limit myself to the precise construction described, inas- 2 much as minor changes therein may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention. 1,
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. Inadeviceof the class described, a vessel or receptacle, a stopper or closure there for having a discharge-opening and provided with a plurality of peripheral channels communicating with said discharge opening, means for maintaining the stopper in. place,
and a filtering medium seated over and secured in position by the stopper.
2. In a device of the class described, a vessel or receptacle, a stopper or closure for the receptacle formed of a plurality of sections one of Which is provided With a dischargeopening and the adjacent section With a series of channels communicating With the discharge-opening, and a sheet of filtering material seated over and maintained in place by the stopper.
3. In a device of the class described, a receptacle, a stopper or closure therefor having a concave seat provided with a dischargeopening, a core seated in the concave portion of the stopper and having channels communicating with the discharge-opening, and a sheet of filtering material seated over the core, said my oWn I have hereto aflixed my signature in 3 the presence of two Witnesses.
FRANK D. PALMER.
