UNITED STATES Patented January 24, 1905.
PATENT OFFICE.
VEHICLE-WHEEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 780,615, dated January 24, 1905.
Application filed March 80, 1903. Serial No. 150,282.
To all whom it nwty concern.-
' fication.
This invention relates to improvements in vehicle-wheels.
It relates particularly to vehicle-wheels. in which metal spokes are used.
The objects of the invention are to provide an improved vehicle wheel which may be quickly and easily assembled and the tension readily adjusted.
A further object is to provide an improved vehicle-wheel which is economical to produce and strong and durable and which is not likely to get out of repair, but one which, should this occur, may be readily repaired by an unskilled workman.
Further objects will definitely appear in the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is pointed out in the claim.
A structure embodying the features of my invention is fully illustrated in. the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speci- .ficatlon, 1n wh1ch Figure 1 is a side elevation View of my improved vehicle-wheel. Fig. 2 is adetail crosssectional view through the hub of my improved vehicle-wheel, taken on a line corresponding to line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 4:. Fig. 4: is a detail sectional view through the felly and tire-plate of my'improved wheel, taken on line 4 4. of Fig. 3, the tire plate, attaching-bolts, and the spoke being shown in full lines. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view corresponding to that shown in Fig. 4 of the structure there illustrated adapted to a metal rim.
In the drawings the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section-lines, and similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the lettered parts of the drawwith suitable seats to receive the heads 0. plates E are secured to the felly by bolts 6,
ings, the wood hub center A is provided with hub-bands'B B, in which are threaded spokesockets b. The hub-block A is adapted to receive a suitable boxing. The spokes'O are provided with heads at their outer ends and are screw-threaded at their inner ends to engage the threaded spoke-sockets b in the hubbands B. The spokes C are secured to the felly D by felly-plates E, which are provided which are passed through the same from the outside, so that the plates E can be removed without disturbing the tire D, against which the heads of the bolts rest.
In assembling the spokes are first inserted through the plates E and then screwed into the sockets in the hub-bands. The nuts of the bolts 6 are then tightened to draw the plate E firmly against the felly, which applies tension to the spokes C in a manner which may be nicely adjusted.
In Fig. 5 Ihave shown my improved wheel as adapted to a metal or channel rim D.
With the parts thus arranged my improved Wheel is quickly and easily assembled, the parts are simple and economical to produce, and the structureis very strong and durable. I have illustrated the same in the form preferred by me. I am aware, however, that it is capable of considerable variation in structural details without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a vehicle-wheel, the combination of a hub having threaded spoke-sockets therein;'rodlike spokes screw-threaded on their inner ends to engage said spoke-sockets, and having heads on their outer ends; plates adapted to engage the heads of said spokes; a rim; and means for detachably securing said plates to said rim, whereby tension is applied to said spokes and they are held against rotation, for the purpose specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two witnesses.
