Description

PATENTED JAN. 17, 1905.
No. 780,437. u
. D. NEALE. ART OF MAKING STAGGERED DYKES. I
APPLIU ATION FILED MAY 2, 1904.
Patented January 17, 1905.
PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID NEALE, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI ART CF MAKING STAGGEHED DIKES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 780,437, dated January 17, 1905.
Application filed May 2, 1904.. Serial No. 205,851.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID NEALE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. Louis, Missouri,,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Art of and Apparatus for Making Staggered Dikes. of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to improvements in the method of and apparatus for constructing dikes; and it consists of the novel features herein shown, described, and claimed.
- In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan illustrating my-improved method and showing the apparatus embodying the principles of my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective, upon an enljarged scale, of one of the anchors shown in Referring to the drawings in detail, the anchors comprise the boxes 3, loaded with rock or other suitable weights. The anchor-ropes 5 are secured to the anchors, and the anchors are sunk in suitable positions in the bed 6 of the stream. The other ends of the ropes .5 are secured to stakes 7 driven in the bank 8,
so that the anchor-ropes extend into the stream at an angle of about forty five degrees, the stakes being above the anchors.
Obstructions 9, 10, and 11 are secured to obstruction-ropes 12, 13, or 14:, said obstruction-ropes being slidingly attached to the anchor-ropes 5 by eyes or loops, so that they will slide down the anchor-ropes toward the anchors. The obstructions may be of any suitable construction, such as rafts, bundles of brush, stumps of trees, or any other material which will catch the sediment of the stream, cause a deposit, andbuild up a dike.
It will be convenient to use obstructions that will just float, so that when they are turned loose the force of the current will draw them down into the water as the obstructioncables slide down the anchor-cables.
This construction is suitable for use in any running stream where it is desired to construct a dike to change the current to narrow into the bed of the stream; attaching cables to the anchors and to the bank at a point above the anchors; and attaching obstructions to the cables, so that'they will slide down the cables into the bed of the stream; specified.
substantially as 2. The improvement in the art of construct- I ing dikes, which comprises dropping anchors into the bed of the stream; and attaching obstructions so that they are held in position by the anchors; substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DAVID N EALE.
