Description

'J. THOMPSON.
SAFE-"AND SUGAR EVAPORATQR,
Patentd May 19, 1868.
N. PETERS. whm-Lnm n hu wauwmnn, ac.
' Quint tens genuine:
Letters Patent No. 78.028, dated May 19,1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN SALT AND SUGAR-EVAPORATORS.
(1th: 51:1 am merit tn in flgtse tie-tart $ntmt nut melting part at it: time. 7
Be it known that I, JOSEPH M. THOMPSON, of Rome, in the county ofOneida, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Salt and Sngar-Evaporators; and I declare the following specification, with the drawings forming part of the same, to be a' full and complete desc'ription of my invention.
Figure 1 is a. sectional side view. V
Figure 2 is a sectional front yiew.
Figure 3 is a plan view.
Similar letters denote similar parts of the apparatus.
AA represent the walls of the apparatus, which are made of iron, stone, or brick, and either portable or stationary. G is the grate, which extends the entire length of the structure, sometimes a distance of forty or fifty feet. AtE is the chimney; F is .the door. ,BB-B B Home the pots or pans forthe reception of theliquid for evaporation, which are movable, and may be either oblong, square,' or round. 0 O are airpassages through the'wallseach side of the grate, and above the level of thefire. D DD D D are branch passages from C C, entering above the fire and under each pan, for the purpose of admitting airthrough the entire length of the apparatus, as it is almost impossible to maintain a suificient degree of heat at the rear end of long evaporators, where as many as thirty or forty pots are used, from the lack of sufiicient air to support perfect combustion.
It is well known that the accumulation ofgas above the fire, unless carried off or consumed, is detrimental to' the generation of heat, and also will not be consumed unless mixed with commo'h air, and, if consumed, adds greatly to the saving of fuel, while the heat generated is wonderfully increased.
Now, the improvement herein describedcons ists simply in the admission of air in jets through the entire length of the apparatus, which .causes the consumption of the gas and perfect combustion throughout.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the following device, substantially as described{ l 3 Theadmission of air by jets into the flame under the pots or pans, at points equidistant from each other.
' JOSEPH M. THOMPSON.
