Letters Patent Non 78,008, dated-May 19, I868.
IMPRO EMENT IN EARNING-MILLS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN;
Be. it kn'own that we, WlILLIAM Q. BS1, of Pleasant Rnn, in-tiie connty of Hnnteirdon, and State of N'cw Jersey, and Grnno v LEIGH, "of Clinton, Station; in the'c'ounty and State aforesaid, have invented certain new and nsefulImprcvcments in Fitnning-Mills, ofwhich the following-is a-full, clear, and'exact description, refer ence heing hed'to the accompanying drawings, ivhich rnake part of this specification, andi'n which- F'gure 1 represents a plan or top view of a fanning-mill inwhich our improvements are embodied, Figure 2 view in elevation of neside of the some, and I Figure 3 n vertical longitudinal section through the same atthe line ar a: offigIL v Onrimprovements ore shown as applied to a; portable fanningmill of ordinary i'orm, theconstrnction of which is so well understood as scarcelyto require description.
The mechanism rests on fonrvvertical legs or posts, A 'A A A connected firmly'togetherby cross-pieces;
B B 3 B B B so as to form a stout frame.
The projecting side of the frame, B1B, serve as'han'dles. I The grain is poured into a. hopper, G,-from which-it falls into a shaking-shoe, D, pivoted- 'nt 01 to the crossbeaim B, and suspended at its rear end, by radius bars d, from the cross-behm B, in the nsu al wsy. The part of the shoe directly beneath the honper is solid, while the rear'part is provided with one or morescreens, E.
The shaking-shoe is vihrated laterally, by devices hereinafter described.
From the screen E the grain falls on a. sieve, F, suspended from the'frame by radinsbars j, and vibrated longitudinallyby devices hereinafter'describcd; The sieve E is' hinged at its rear end, by leather straps-f, to
a frame, G, suspended from the freme at its for word end by radius bars g, A riddle, Hfis attached tothe'frame. G. It will be noted that the screen F, frame G, and riddle H, all vibrate longitiidinally, but-that, as the screen F is suspendcdcentrallyon short radius bars, while the riddle and frame aresnsp'ended-fi om long radius bnrsg at one end, the riddle will thus swing through a. longer are than the screen, and the screen F will have a rising and falling on openin'g'end shutting movement, which we have found by'exnerimentpecnlierly eflicacions in sepni-atingthechafl' from the grain.
The stuffi'uhich passes through the screen F and riddle H fallsnpon the cant hoard-I, and drops into the grain-her K, through an opening, it, left for that'purposc, while the heavy grain, which falls over the end of the'riddleH, passes over the inclined bottom-hoard J, end falls through an opening, j. When it is ,desired'to run all the screenings through this latter'opening, the'opening Isis closed by a valve-hoard, L, shownin red in fig. 3. I I 5 l D As the grain falls through thcscr'eens and riddles, it is exposed to ablast from a fan, 'M. V This fan hose spur-pinion m on one end of its shaft, driven by a spur-wliecl,-N, and shaft'n, driven by n, crank, it, or in any welhknown preper way; A crank, 0, on the other end of the fan-shaft, reciproedtes n pi tm nmflgwhich vibrates a. boll-,crank let er, P, connected with the shake-shoe D by a. link-rod, thus shaking the shoe sidewise';
A U-shaped bracket, "R, attached to and projecting-below the pitinnn O, h'esone end of abalance-lever,
.S, pivoted to it. This lever oscillates horizontally on 'a-vert-ical pivot; 8, near its-middle, secnred-to-tl 1e bottom l or cant-hoard I, while its inner end, 3', is pivoted-to a central bar, 71., (shown in red in fig. 1; the longitudinally. rockingfrnme. The lever S play-s freely, vertically,-on its pins 8 s.
By the above-described mode of construction, the shaking-shoe D and frame G; are vibrated in directions at right angles to each other by means of a. single pitmen, O, and the frame G'is free to rise and fall as it oscillotes without interfering with the balance-lever, which moves in o. horizontal arc.' What we claim as our invention, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent,-is
I. The combination, substantially as set forth, of the crankedfnn-sheft, th pitman O, the helhcrdnl; lever P, which sustains the rear end of the pitmon, the lafterally-vibrnting shaking-shoe D, the longitudinally-vibrating 3 screen-frame G, and the horizontally-oscilldtingiBalance-level?S, for the purposes specified.
2. The combination,suhstantially as set'fo-rth, of 5 longitudinally-vibrating scieen, F, suspended centrally from shoit radius barsf, with a. longitudiunlly-vihrating frame, G,-suspended at its fo rn'ard end by long radius bars g, and hinged atits rear encl,f, to the screen F, whereby an opening and shutting o1- risin'g nudhfalling, as well as o.- longitudinally-Vibrating moyement, is imparted to the latter, and the grain thereby thoroughly sifted 3. The combination, substantially as set forth, with-the pitman O, of the depending braeket R, the balance-- lever S, and the longitudinally-vibrating fr ame G, fnuthe, purposes set forth.
The removable deflecting-board L, arranged and operating-as set forth. In. testimony whereof,"iv.e have hereuntq subscribe-cl our names. I t
