PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK OTTO BENDIX AND EMILE BENDIX, OF NET ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
FILTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 779,346, dated January 3, 1905. Application filed March 7, 1903. Serial No. 1451614- To (LZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known thatI we, FREDERICK OTTO BEN- DIX and EMILE BENDIX, citizens of the United States, and residents of New Orleans,in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Filter, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description. This invention relates to improvements in water-filters; and a main object is to provide an improved means for cleaning the exterior of the filter-stone.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the general description.
Ie will describe a filter embodying our invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying' drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.V
Figure 1 is a section on the line 1 1 of Fig. 2, showing a filter embodying the invention; and Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
The filter comprises a casing or cylinder 5, in which the filter-stone 6 is arranged. This filter-stone is designed to be rotated when it is desired to clean it. Therefore it is mounted on a tube 7, the portion of said tube within the stone being perforated for the inletof water. The lower end of the tube 7 has a step-bearing 8 secured to the bottom of the casing, and the upper portion extends through a stuffing-box 9, and its upper end has a bearing in a stuffing-box 10, which provides communication with a discharge-pipe 11 for filtered water. VAttached to the tube 7 is a bevel-gear 12, meshing with a bevel-pinion 13 on a shaft 14, provided with a crank-handle 15. On the lower, end of the tube 7 is a circular plate 1G, having Scrapers 17 on its lower side designed to stir up thesediment that may gather at the bottom of the cylinder, so that the same may be washed out through a pipe 18. l
The cleaning device consists of a plate 19, attached to a rod 20, mounted to turn in bearings 21 22, and the upper portion of this rod 20 extends through a stufiing-box 23 and is provided with a handle 24C. This handle may be made removable, if desired. The cleaning-plate 19 is composed of seventy-five per cent. of cement and twenty-ve per cent. of pulverized pumice-stone. vWe find such cleaning device preferable to metal, because the cleaning is done when the edge of the plate is held against the stone by rubbing action instead of scraping action, as such rubbing motion will give a smooth surface to the filter-stone and will cause but very little wear on the stone.
Extended vertically in the cylinder 5 and nearly the entire lengt-h thereof is an inlettube 25, this tube being perforated, as indicated, to discharge water which is received through a pipe 26. The pipe 11 is connected to the pipe 26 by a pipe 27, and in this pipe 27 is a valve 28, which is to be closed while filtering water.
In the operation the entering water, which may fill the cylinder or casing, will percolate through the filter-stone and pass into the tube 7, from which it will pass to the outlet-pipe 11. Of course the water in passing through the stone itself will be cleansed of all impurities.
IVhen it is desired to clean the filter-stone, the plate 19 is to be held against the same by means of the handle 24, and then the stone is to be rotated while the water from the tube 25 is sprinkled thereon. At this time the valve 28 may be opened, permitting the tube 7 and the pipes 11 and 27 to be thoroughly cleaned by the water passing through the same. The washing-water will of course pass out through the valved pipe 18. While the water is discharging through the pipe 18 a cock 29 is to be opened to admit air.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a filter in combination, a cylinder, a cylindrical stone having a substantially verticai bore therein, a member disposed within said bore constituting an arbor for said stone, the extremity of said member projecting below said stone and resting upon the bottom of said cylinder, and a plate rigidly carried by oess in the under side thereof, means for rotating said tube, and a scraper on the face of Said stone.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this speclieation in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
