nvirnovsn MACHINE ron MAKING DRAIN-HPB.

TO AALL WHOM ITMAY CONCERNf Be it known that I, ROBERT SKINNER, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improved Machinefor Making'v Drain Vand Water-Pipes;`and I do herebydcclare the following` description and aocompanying'drawings 'are ,sluliicient toenable any person skilled in the art orscience to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention-or improvemcntswithout further invention or experiment. i
The object of' my invention is to provide an improved machine for makingdraih and Water-pipes, and con sists of'a stationary cylinder, in which a core is placed. 'A follower, attached to a piston-head, moves up and down around 'the stationary core, passing through slots inl-a centre-block. Aclosely-itting packing-ring is placed aronnd the core, and slides up and' down upon it by the action oi' the piston-or follower. t
Another ring is placed at the top of thecylindenmand thcfcement or material of which the pipe is made is held between the two rings around the core'iin the cylinder- 'A crossshead is placed over the top ring, whch is regulated by hand-wheels `or set-screws. The pressureupon the material between the two rings is derived from the engine driving up the piston.
A steam-jacket is made around the cylinder, for heating the material used.
To more fully illustrate and describe my invention, reference is had 'tothe accompanyingdrawings, and i letters marked thereon, of which- .Eigure 1 is a side elevationl of my apparatus. Figure2 is a sectional elevation. Figure 3 is a front view. i Figure 4 is a. horizontal orcross-section at the line :v 2:, on iig. 2, showingthe core E, and its attachments,
a a, to the centre-block B, corres 'ondin yto Vthe slots G' Gr', in the follower G one of vwhich is shown in fini. 2;,
i, P g 7 a i also, the curved openings F F, through the cntre-block'in'which the follower slides. -A is a. base-block, and B a. centre-block. Through i-he coi-ners of these blocks pass pillars or supportinga posts, C C C C. The lower end and centres of these posts are turned so as toform shoulders, D D D D, affords.
ing space for the blocks to play up and -down along the posts, and therebypreventing hreakageii` too great a power is applied to. the machine.
To the centre-blocl is attaclleda. core, E,.whioh extends to near the upper endsol` the posts Through the centre-block are made curved openings, F F, in which a follower, G, moves up and down along the core, slots, G G', being made in it to avoid the attachment of the core to the centre-block, yet the centrer-block'and core may be-cast inV one piece, having theopcnings for the fol1ower. The core is made slightly tapering, so that the pipe can be easily withdrawn from it after being compressed or formed around it. A
By this constructionofjhe, follower and openings, the materials of which the ppesare composed 4are pre-- vented from falling through .the openings vin the centre-block.4 The follower isiconnected to a, piston-,or engine,
H', which moves in the lower or base-block between the. posts or pillars.
A cylinder, I, is placed on the upper `face of the centre-block, rrhere'it is held by bolts .passing through a flange and entering the block. The upper end of the cylinder is of n. bell-shape, and the whole is provided with a steam-jacket, J, into which steam is lintrducedfor heating the material employed, as incase where bitul' men or pitchv is-uscd, and may be of advantage in winter, when .pipes are to he made ofcement. i
At the top of the machine is placed a cross-head, KVwhich is'attachedl by set-nuts'or hand-wheels to movable barsor arms, L L, which are pivote'd in slots made in the sidekpieees or block-s `M M, which are fixed to the upper ends of the four posts, and also keptjinplace by set-screws.' When not employed, the-cross-liead can befmoved from side to side oi' the ,lmachine, so that the pipc can bewithdrawn, or vreightsand rings be introduced. l
A closely-littingring, N, is placed around the core, and is moved upand down by the end of the follower. The follower being Withdrawn, the material of. which the pipes vare composed is introduced 'to thecylinder` at 'the top, and falls` down around thecorefupon the ring, filling the entire space, Vwhena,1ing,0,"is placed in the' mouth of the cylinder, and a weight, P, placed on' the ringrand theicross-head is brought over the inoxith of the cylinder, the ring O being out away on one side in order Ato allorr the head-block to slide over it with ease, when it isscrewed down bythe hand-Wheel or nuts. .The power is applied to the. piston-end of the machine, either by steam, hydraulic, hydrostatic, or other power, that will produce the requiredpressure.-
When this is attained, the cross-head and rings :tre removed from the top of the cylinder,l and the same power used to force'out tliecompressed pipe.. u
The ring O muy be ont in diierent shapes to form a. variety of openings ab the endof the pipe; and for` constructing a. hell-shape for the top it may be removed entirely, and the .weight placed at the top'of the cylinder.
For forming openings in the pipe, for connecting at right ging-les, a. curved piece of rnetnl, of the necessary size and shape, .may be introduced between the corel and cylinder.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is Y 1. The follower Gr, constructed with slots G G end the curved openings F F, in which it slides, in combination nith the stationery coreE and ring substantially as' and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with the above-claimed appar-etna, I alain! the steam-jacket J, for heating the same, and the meterial worked thereby, substantially as deeeribedv In witness whereof, I halve hereunto set my hnnd and seul.
