TQ LL WIIOM ITMAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM 0. LESLIE, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphiayand State of Penn'- sylvnnia, h-.ive invented certaiunew and useful Improvements in Machines for Dressing Stone; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the. accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and to the letter-sof reference marked thereou,.like`letters`indicating like parts wherever th'eyoecur. I
To enable others skilled in the art to construct and use my invention, I will-proceed to describe it.'
- My' invention 'relates .to th-e dressing ot` stone for building and similar purposes, by machinery, and it consists in anovel arrangement of mechanism-whereby the stone is fed along so las to be operated upon hy a i series of clit-ters attached toa rotating wheel.
The drawing'represents my machine in perspective.
In carrying out and applyingv my'invention, I construct a machine substantially such as shown inthe drawing. This machine consists-of a suitablefrapig, in whichis mounted' a wheel, A, haring attached to it aseri'es ofcutters, b and e, as represented. Thisiwheel A is mounted on a shaft,'D,-having on its opposite end a spurgear, E, which'receives rmotion from'a driving-wheel, H. Upon the shaft D is 'also mounted a bevel-gear, F,
arranged izo-engage with a similar bevel-wheel, Gr', secured to the upper; end of a vertical` shaft, shown in red, and having on its lower. end a worm-wheel, t, which operates a wheel, w, securedto a`shaft, 1n,l this shaft m extending out at the 4frontof the main frame, underneath a pair iof; ways, C, and having its enter en djournallegl A in a lever,l L, pivotedto the side of the'outer way C, as shown at o.
- Upon the ways() is placed a sliding table, B,lon which the stone to .he cut or dressed is to be placed and carriedrtliis table B-being arranged to move along close in front jot' and parallel with the faee of the cutterwheel A2-as represented.
To the under side of vthis table' B is secured a rack, a, into which aI wheel,- u, gears, said wheel being mounted on the shaft m. By operating the lever L thewheel a ca n be thrown in or `out of gear with the rack d atpleaeure, and thus the table B' fed forward or stopped', as may he desired.
The operation is. as'follows: Thetable, being run back, the block of s tone is placed thereon, and the machine set in motion. i 'The tabla'with the stone thereon, is fed slowlyalong, and as it eolnes `within reach of the cutters on th'h wheel A, `which latter Ahasa rapid motion imparted to it, the face of the, block is cut away, leaving'an'o'ven and smooth surface. Iff the 4stone is very uneven, andl more than vone cut is required tn fa'c'e it upy true and smooth, the table may be run back, and the 'stone set over towards the'wheel, and then run past again,an-d thus the operation may be repeatedas often as may be necessary.
`The vcutters may be ofany form or style required, the/y oi4 course being so "attached to the wheel-that they can he removed for sharpening, or for substituting others, at pleasure.
In like manner the machine may be used for euttingslabs or blocks of Astones into pieees,-'the carriage, in that case, being nrrangedto'carry the Astone along under the wheel, so that the projecting points ofthecutters will strike upon thenpper-surface ofzthe stoneand, as it is fed along, cuta narrow eh'annelr grooyetherein,
and this operation is to he repeated until the groove'is cut of snilicient depth .to permit the stone to be brokenl apartin 4a straight line, after'whichits edges may be'dressed up, as previouslydeseribed. In such cases,'it will be necessary to so arrange the tableon which the-stone rests that it can heelevated'at eachsuccessivel "cut, or..` the same object may be eiectcdby mounting the cutter-wheel in a frame that can-be raised or lowered, andv thus feed the-cutters totheir work, the mechanicalA details of which `it isjnot neessa-rytodescrhc, as they will be obvious toany one skilled in the eonstruction of machinery of this and similar kinds.
It will thus be seen, by means of a machine constructed and operating on the principle herein described,
stones may be' either cut er dre'ssed'vith greatrapidity, and atfa great saving of time and elp, ense,'ahd thus the slow andlaborious handcperation's be dispensed with.
Having thus ldescribed my invention, what I claim is i I The combination of the wheel A, having ,the eutters'attached, with the table 2B provided withthe rack' a,
and the shaft m provided with the pinion u, and having its outer end journalled in the-1ever'Lall arranged to operate substantially as'described.
WM. o. LESLIE.'
