PATENT OFFICE.
IRA J. OISSNA, OF PARAOHUTE, COLORADO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOSEPH LUXEN, OF RIFLE, COLORADO.
POTATO-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 778,530, dated December 27, 1904.
Application filed June 7,1904. Serial No. 211.515.
To (all 1071,0772, it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRA J. OIssNA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Parachute, in the county of Garfield and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Potato-Cutter, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to potato-cutters.
The objects of the invention are to improve and simplify the construction of such devices; furthermore, to increase their efficiency in operation.
W'ith these objects in view the invention resides in the particular combination and arrangement of parts and in the precise details of construction hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a potatocutter constructed in accordance with the invention, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
The reference-numeral 1 indicates a bench or other suitable support provided with legs 2 and adapted to be straddled by a man during the operation of cutting potatoes. Upon the support 1 is a square flange 3, which is extended three or four inches above the surface of the support 1 and surrounds a square opening therein. ithin the flange 3 are disposed the knives i and 5, which preferably cross each other at a right angle. The cutting edges of the knives t and 5 are on a level with the upper edge of the flange 3. One corner of the flange 3 is cut away, as shown at 6, for a purpose presently to be described. If desired, one of the legs 2 of the support may be extended upward to form an upright 7, upon the upper end of which is mounted a lever 8. The lever 8 is provided with a block 9, adapted when the lever is pushed down to descend upon the knives 4 and 5 and force the potato held thereover to be cut into sections. Beneath the knives L and 5 is placed a basket 10, the purpose of which is to receive the cut potatoes as they fall.
The method of using the improved potatocutter will be understood from the foregoing description in connection with the drawings.
A man straddles the support 1. Grasping the lever 8 with his right hand, he uses his left hand to hold a potato upon the junction of the 5 two blades 4 and 5. By pushing down the lever 8 the potato is out into four pieces, which fall into the basket beneath the knives. It will be understood that the mans wrist extends through the cut-away portion 6 of the flange 3 and is thus prevented from being cut or bruised against said flange when the lever 8 is depressed. If it be desred to cut a potato into more than four pieces, it is held upon the near end of the knife 5, and slices are succes- 6O sively out therefrom by raising and lowering the lever 8, the potato being held in the hand until it shall have been sufficiently sliced and being shifted in position upon the knife 5 after each depression of the lever.
The device of the invention is strong, simple, durable, and inexpensive in construction and rapid and efficient in operation- In its novel combination and arrangement of parts and in its details of construction it presents 7 an improvement over prior devices of a similar character.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is A potato-cutter including a support having a rectangular opening for the passage of the cut potatoes, a flange carried by the support and extending around all save one corner of the opening, the top of the flange being in a plane above the top of the support, cuttingknives supported by the flange, and in a plane approximately in the plane of the upper edge of said flange, a pivotally-mounted operatinglever, and a block carried by the lever and serving as a means for forcing potatoes on the 5 knives.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
IRA J. CISSNA.
