TO ALL PERSONS TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS VMAY COME:
-Be it knownthat I, HERMAN SEIDEL, of Roxbury, inthe county of Norfolk, and State of Massachusetts, a citizen of the Duchy of Nassau, have invented a. new anduseful Improvement in Piano-Fortes; and do hereby declare the same to b e fully' described inthe following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of 'which- A Figure 1 is'a topv view,A and 4 Figure 2 a side elevation of a ypiano-forte action las' improved Vbyme'.
In such drawings, A denotes the' key, B the yv'or jack, C the hammer, D the string, and E-thedamper,
th'eylbeing of` the usual form, construction, and -arrangement, except that the keydoes not extend underneath the rest-block F, by whichthe'metallicframeL for sustaining the strings, is supported.
'In my piano-action, the weight-:piecejf the damper, instead of being arranged as a lever, so as to rest on the damper, or below the rest-block, hdnpon the key, is a simple loaded piece of wood, G, arranged-vertically in front off and close to the rest-block', Vand'lpxovided with a wire foot, a,'to resten thea-ear partof the key.v The said foot, as' well as a guidepin, b, also extended from the lower end ofthe weight-piece, slides freely ,through a guide-shelf, c, projecting. from 'the rest'block,'5i 1oh guide-pin b serving to prevent the weight-piece `froln turning around, so as to throw the foot `soif the key. vA stem oi' Wire, d, projects up from the weightpiece, and through a'hole in the frame I, andto and supports th'damper, the latter being ed uponsuch WML The 10B-d 0f the weight-piece is shownvat v :Bythis arrangement of the weight-piece, the, rest-block can be extended further down' thanusual, andthus;
be made-stronger. Other advantages, also, result fromV it, as it avoids the use of levers and their joints -for supporting thedamper.
' What I claim as my improvement or invention, is--V Y The arrangement of the weight-piece G, pro-vided with a guide-pin, or its' equivalent, with respect to the damper E, the key A, the frame I, and' the rest-block 'F, the wh'glebeing substantially as hereinbefore explained. HERMAN SEIDEL. Witnesses.

SAMUEL N. PIPER.
