REVERSING-GEAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 778,038, dated. December 20, 1904. Application filed November 12, 1903. Serial No. 180,870.
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FEoDoR O. HIRsoH, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reversing-Gears, of which the following is a specification sufiicient to enable others skilled in the art to which the invention appertains to make and use the same.
My improvements relate generally to devices for reversing the motion derived from a power-shaft and transmitting power to the propeller-shaft, so that the latter may be made to rotate in either direction. v
The object of the invention is to attain a simple, cheap, and effective reversing mechanism which shall be positive and practically instantaneous in action; and the invention consists in the special construction and arrangement of the parts hereinafter described and claimed specifically.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of my improved reversing mechanism. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section, partly in elevation, taken axially through the reversing mechanism upon plane of line 2 2, Fig. 1, the parts being shown in the intermediate position. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the parts adjusted to cause the propeller-shaft to rotate with the power-shaft. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional elevation upon plane of line 4 at, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a transverse section of the expansion-ring.
M is the motor or power shaft, supported in suitable bearings and having an axial extension M secured rigidly to it by means of the bolted collars m m.
P is the propeller-shaft, also mounted in' suitable bearings in axial alinement with the motor-shaft M. The opposed ends of the two shafts rest in and support a sleeve O, which is formed with four radial arms 0 0 0 c, to which is rigidly secured the cone-drum D. Two of these arms 0 c carry each an idler bevel-gear ff. Meshing with the idlers ff on one side is the bevel-gear F, rigidly secured to the propeller-shaft P, and upon the other side is the beveled gear E, rigidly secured to the extension IV of the motor or power shaft M. The drumD is formed withahub (Z, which rests loosely upon the hub of the gear E and upon the collar 127., so as to be free to rotate independently thereon under certain conditions hereinafter explained.
Gr is a conical shell formed with a hub 9, through which the hub (Z of the drum D extends. This conical shell G is formed with two lateral hearings or arms I I, the outer extremities of which rest upon horizontal slides .J J, being held thereon by caps K K.
H is a split ring, two sections it 71/ of which spring from a common cross-head /L, rigidly secured to the miter-gear F, as will be seen by reference to Fig. 2. This split expansionring H fits within the cylindrical portion cl" of the drum D, and its sections 72. it rest loosely therein except when the free ends of the sections are sprung outward by the levers J J under the action of the sleeve V, controlled by the lever L. The levers J J are fulcrumed on the cross-head /L,and their inner or longarms are provided with adjustable contacts j j for engagement with the sleeve V. By adjusting the contacts if the degree of pressure exerted peripherally by the split ring H may be increased or diminished, as desired. The ring H has a hub H, with ashoulder if. The sleeve V is slidably mounted on this hub and is adapted to engage the said shoulder to limit the movement of the sleeve. Retractile springs y" tend constantly to withdraw the outer or short arms of the levers J J from contact with the free ends of the sections it it of the split ring H and to counteract the centrifugal force exerted thereon, so that said levers shall exert no pressure against the said sections h it, except when forcibly and positively rocked against the resistance of the springs by the sleeve V.
S is a rock-shaft resting in hearings in the stationary supports U N. Rigidly secured to the rock-shaft 'S are the rock-levers R R, pivotally connected, by means of links T T, to the lateral arms I I of the conical shell G, the link T being also pivotally connected with the hand-lever L.
The operation of my improved apparatus is as follows: When the lever is adjusted to the central or intermediate position, the parts will be held relatively as shown in Fig. 2,
both shell G and the ring H being out of engagement with the drum D. Under these conditions no motion will be imparted to the propeller-shaft P, since the conical drum is free to rotate independently. By moving the hand-lever L forward the conical frictionshell G will be forced farther away from the drum D, while the ring H will be brought into frictional contact with the inner surface of the drum D. Underthese conditions the drum D couples the two shafts together rigidly through the medium of the ring H and gearing, and both motor and propeller shafts rotate in the same direction. When the lever L is moved back, the ring H is released and the non-rotatable shell G is brought into engagement with the drum D, holding the latter rigidly against rotation. Under these conditions the motion transmitted by the gear E through the idlers f f to the gear F is reversed and the propeller-shaft is rotated in a direction opposite to that in which the motorshaft rotates.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with the motor-shaft, of a propeller-shaft mounted in axial alinement therewith, a sleeve supporting the opposed ends of said shafts and having radial arms, a cone-drum detachably secured to said arms, idler beveled gears on opposite arms, a gear rigidly secured to the propeller-shaft and meshing with the said idlers on one side, a beveled gear rigidly secured to the motorshaft and meshing with the idlers upon the other side, an axial extension to said motorshaft, collars securing the same thereto, said drum having a hub at one end extending in opposite directions from its web and resting loosely upon the hub of the gear on the motor-shaft, and held between the end of the hub of the last-mentioned bevel-gear and the end of one of said collars, a conical shell having a hub through which the hub of said drum extends, said shell having lateral arms, horizontal slides upon which the outer extremities of said arms rest, caps for holding the same in position, a split expansion-ring in sections extending from a common cross-head rigidly secured to the gear on the propeller-shaft, said ring being fitted within the drum, and having a hub and means including a sleeve slidabl y mounted on the hub of the expansion-ring for forcing the said sections outwardly to contact with the inner face of the drum.
2. The combination with the motor-shaft, of a propeller-shaft mounted in axial alinement therewith, a sleeve supporting the opposed ends of said shafts and having radial arms, a cone-drum detachably secured to said arms, idler beveled gears on opposite arms, a gear rigidly secured to the propeller shaft and meshing with the said idlers on one side, a beveled gear rigidly secured to the motorshaft and meshing with the idlers upon the other side, an axial extension to said motorshaft, collars securing the same thereto, said drum having a hub at one end extending from opposite sides of its web and resting loosely upon the hub of the gear on the motor-shaft, and held between the end of the hub of the last-mentioned bevel-gear and the end of one of said collars, a conical shell having a hub through which the hub of said drum extends, said shell having lateral arms, horizontal slides upon which the outer extremities of said arms rest, caps for holding the same in position, a split expansion-ring in sections extending from a common cross-head rigidly secured to the gear on the propeller-shaft, and having a hub with a shoulder, said ring being fitted within the drum, a sleeve slidably mounted. on said hub and engageable with said shoulder to limit its movement, means for forcing the said sections outwardly to contact with the inner face of the drum, and means for adjusting the degree of pressure exerted peripherally by said expansion-ring.
3. The combination with the motor-shaft, of a propeller-shaft mounted in axial alinement therewith, a sleeve supporting the opposed ends of said shafts and having radial arms, a cone-drum detachably secured to said. arms,- idler beveled gears on opposite arms, a gear rigidly secured to the propeller-shaft and meshing with the said idlers on one side, a beveled gear rigidly secured to the motorshaft and meshing with the idlers upon the other side, an axial extension to said motorshaft, collars securing the same thereto, said drum having a hub at one end extending from opposite sides of its web and resting loosely upon the hub of the gear on the motor-shaft, and held between the end of the hub of the last-mentioned bevel-gear and the end of one of said collars, a conical shell having a hub through which the hub of said drum extends, said shell having lateral arms, horizontal slides upon which the outer extremities of said arms rest, caps for holding the same in position, a split expansion ring in sections extending from a common cross-head rigidly secured to the gear on the propeller-shaft, and having a hub with a shoulder, said ring being fitted within the drum, a sleeve slidably mounted on said hub and adapted to engage said shoulder to limit the movement of the sleeve, means coacting with said sleeve for forcing the said sections outwardly to contact with the inner face of the drum, means for adjusting the degree of pressure exerted peripherally by said expansion-ring, and means for counteracting the centrifugal force of the sections on said ring.
