SPECIFICATION forming partv of Letters Patent No. 777,791, dated December 20, 1904.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, GERRIT J. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fail-Covers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in covers for tobacco-pails; and its objects are, first, to provide a cover that will keep the tobacco moist, and, second, to provide access to the pail without the necessity of removing theentire cover. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a sectional elevation of a tobaccopail and cover on the line of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top plan of the same, and Fig. 3 shows the removable cover with a gasket around it to prevent evaporation.

Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

A represents an ordinary tobacco-pail., and B represents the cover, which is made of earthenware. The lower portion of this cover is porous, so that water placed in the chamber b may percolate slowly through and moisten the air in the pail sufficiently to prevent the tobacco from drying out and becoming dusty and brittle. The sides and upper surface of this cover should be glazed, so that no moisture can escape through them, and the cover O, also glazed, is made to lit closely into the opening in the cover B and should also be glazed to avert the danger of water or moisture escaping, while at the same time it provides ready access to the contents of the pail without removing the heavy cover B. I prefer that the handle or knob c be formed Hush with the upper surface of the cover, for the reason, first, that it enables me to place packages in vertical tiers, and, second, it protects the knob from the danger of being broken off by contact with other articles.

To render the joint between the removable cover O and the permanent cover B absolutely water-tight, and thus avert the danger of eval oration from the pail with the danger of deteriorating the flavor or quality of the contents of the pail, especially designed as a tobacco-pail, I sometimes form an offset in the cover C and place a gasket c, of rubber or other suitable material, therein, so that its contact with the walls of the two covers will render the line of division water and air tight, if necessary.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, isi- In combination` with a pail, an annular porous earthenware cover having a beveled aperture through the center and a water-chamber within its walls, and a central removable cover fitting said aperture, said central cover made thin and the handle constructed therein below the top of the cover, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
