HOT-WATER HEATING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 777,308, dated December 13, 1904'.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANDERS Boncn BECK, captain, a subject of the King of Denmark, residing at 16 Uhristiansvej, Hellerup, in the Kingdom of Denmark, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hot-Tater Heating Apparatus, of which the following is a speciiication.
In that kind of hot-water heating apparatus in which the velocity of the water through the pipes is increased through the development or the introduction of steam in the main risingpipe the water in leaving the latter will have the temperature of the steam, whereas, especially in mild weather, a lower temperature may be desirable in the radiators of the heating apparatus. Even when the velocity of the water is increased by other means than development of steam in the main rising-pipeas, for in stance, by the application of injectors or pumpsit may be desirable to lower the tem perature of the water as it leaves the injector or the pump.
The subject of the present invention an arrangement whereby the temperature of the water in a central place just as it leaves the main rising-pi1 )c or the pump can be regulated to that best suitable to the circumstances.
' The accompanying drawing illustrates diagrammatically, as an example, one form of carrying out the invention.
E is a low-pressure steam-boiler in which a constant pressure can be kept in well-known manner by a draft-regulator actuated by the pressure of the steam in the boiler.
s is a steam-pipe that connects the boiler with a perforated tube in a receptacle H, (the heater,) which is inserted in the main risingpipe N of a hot-water heating apparatus.
A pipe M, that is theuippermost part of the main rising-pipe, connects the heater H with the expansion-tank S. From the upper part of the tank S an overflowupef leads to the condenser C, formed as a jacket around the main rising-pipe N, and, further, on to the \vater-space of the boiler. From the lower part of the expansion-tank S the pipe N conducts away the heated water. On the condenser C is placed an automatic air-valve 1, that keeps open till the interior of the condenser is filled by steam, when it closes automatically, preventing the escape of steam.
WVhen steam generated in the boiler penetrates into the heater H through the perforated pipe, the water in the heater boils, and consequently when the water rises to the expansion-tank S through the pipe M it mixed with steam-bubbles. The specific gravity of this current being very low, the velocity of the water first through the pipe M and then through all the pipes of the whole heating apparatus will be greatly increased. In this manner the water is heated at the same time it is put in motion. The steam that rises with the water into the tank S passes through the pipe f to the condenser C. Here it is condensed and linds its way back to the boiler, together with the water that overflows from. the tank S through the pipcf. The foregoing arrangement of apparatus is well known and forms no part of this invention. It is only described to show one kind of apparatus to which the invention can be applied with advantage.
Now it will be seen from the drawing that the pipe N, through which the heated water leaves the expansion-tank, is provided with a regulating-valve A and connected with the pipe N, which leads to the radiators at a point where connection is also made between the pipe N and the short pipe N". The pipe N", which is provided with a valve B, is connected. at its other end to the pipe N, through which the cooled water leaves the radiators at the point where the pipe N connected with the pipe N, that leads to the heater H. it will be seen that if the valve B is shut while the valve A is kept open the water will pass to the radiators through the pipes N and N at the same temperature with which it leaves the tank E; but if the valve B is opened and the valve A is closed partially the effect will be as follows: Because the valve A is only partly open the water flowing past it in pipe N will not be sullicient to wholly lill the riser N and when the current of water in the return-pipe N reaches the point where that pipe is connected with the two pipes N and N the current will divide itself, part going to the heater H, but therest passing through the pipe N and the valve B to the as described above, it is ming water arriving through pipe N. By closing the valve A in pipe N, more or less, it is possible in this manner to lower the temperature of the water passing through pipe N to the radiators as much as desired below the temperature existing in pipe N.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a hot water heating apparatus with means for increasing the velocity of the water pipe N where, l the combination of a continuous hot-water led with heated heating-circuit, a heater H inserted in said circuit, a pipe N connecting the main returnpipe of said circuit with the main flow-pipe as a by-pass short-circuiting the heater, a valve B on the by-pass and a regulating-valve A controlling the flow of water through the heater.
