Be it known that we, GEORGE S. TIFFANY, residing at Tecumseh, and EDWIN C. SWORD, residing at Adrian, in the county of Lenawee, State of Michigan, citizens of the United States, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in Frictional Clutch- Pulleys; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a friction clutchpulley; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth, and pointed out particularly in the claims.
The object of the invention is to provide a friction clutch-pulley of comparatively simple and inexpensive construction in which the arrangement is such as to attain a high degree of efliciency and insure a smooth and perfect operation of the clutch, enabling a perfect adjustment of the parts to be accomplished and insuring a retention of the desired adjustment.
The above object is attained by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section, of a pulley and clutch mechanism involving our invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the inner face of the disk, which is keyed to the shaft and carries the friction shoes. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an elevation of the shifter, which is connected with the operative levers of the clutch, as hereinafter explained. Fig. 5 is an enlarged transverse section, as on line 5 5 of Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is an elevation of one of the friction-shoes removed from the disk or holder. Fig. 7 is an elevation of one of the caps or guide-plates, which hold the stems of the friction-shoes in their respective ways on said disk.
Referring to the characters of reference, 1 designates the friction Wheel or pulley, which is loosely mounted on the shaft 2 and is held against longitudinal movement in one direction by the collar 3, which engages the hub thereof. The pulley 1 is provided with an overhanging flange 4. Secured to the shaft by means of a key 5 or by other suitable means is adisk 6, whose hub abuts against the hub of the wheel or pulley 1, having the radial arms 7, each of which is provided with a way 8 in the inner face thereof, which receives the stem 9 of the friction shoe 10, seated in and adapted to reciprocate in said way. The arrangement of parts is such that the friction-shoes 10 are presented adjacent the inner arc of the overhanging flange 4. of the pulley, and the faces of said shoes are provided with a pad 11 of wood fiber or other suitable material to create the necessary friction between them and the flange of the pulley. To confine the shoes properly in place and allow them to reciprocate in their ways, a cap or guide plate 12 is secured over the stem of each of said shoes by means of the bolts 13, as clearly shown in Fig. 5.
A lever 14 is pivoted at .15 to each of the stems of the friction-shoes, said levers passing through the slotted openings 16 in the disk 6 and being fulcrumed at 17 to the inner ends of the linksl8, whose outer ends are pivoted at 19 to the lugs 20, projecting from the outer face of said disk. By this arrangement a movable fulcrum is provided for said levers. The long end of the levers 14L is pivoted at 21 to the inner ends of the sleeves 22. These sleeves are each provided with a tapped socket adapted to receive an adjusting-screw 23,and each of said screws is pivoted upon a pin 25 betweena pair of ears 24E, which form abearing for said pin and which project laterally from the face of the shifting disk 26, which is splined upon a shaft 2. The hub 27 of the shifter 26 is chan neled at 28 to receive a bifurcated lever (not shown) for the purpose of moving the shift ing disk in the operation of the clutch, as will be understood. As the shifter is moved away from the pulley, the outer ends of the levers 14 are drawn outwardly, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, thereby operating the short ends of said levers to withdraw the frictionshoes from contact with the flange of the pulley. A reverse movement of the shifter will move the long ends of the levers inwardly, thereby setting the friction-shoes against the flange of the pulley, so as to lock them thereto and cause said pulley to turn with the disk 6 and the shaft 2-.
It will be noted that the links 18 form movable fulcrums for the levers 14, which are pivoted thereto, whereby said levers automatically adjust themselves in their operation and prevent a cramping strain upon the stems of the brake-shoes, insuring a free movement of said shoes in their respective ways. By means of the adjusting-screws 23 the levers 1 may be adjusted so as to place the friction-shoes in any desired proximity to the flange of the pulley. The adjustment of said screws may be accomplished by removing the pins 25. After adjustment said pins so secure said screws as to prevent a possible movement thereof and a change in the adj ustment, while the levers '14 lie adjacent to and nearly parallel with the axle, forming a compact and strong construction.
Having thus fully set forth this invention, what is claimed is- 1. In a friction clutch-pulley, the combination of a pulley loose upon the axle, a disk fixed on the axle, friction-shoes slidably mounted on said disk, and adapted to engage a flange of the pulley, horizontal levers pivoted to said friction-shoes, radial links pivoted to said disk and to said levers forming a fulcrum therefor movable in the plane of the axes of said disk as said levers operate, and a shifter mounted upon the axle and connected with said levers for actuating them.
2. In a friction clutch-pulley, the combination of the pulley loose upon the axle, having a projecting flange, a disk fast upon the axle, diametrically movable friction-shoes mounted upon said disk adapted to engage the flange of the pulley, links pivoted tothe face of said disk, their inner ends being adapted to swing freely in the plane of the axes of said disk, levers fulcrumed at the inner ends of said links, the short ends of said levers projecting through apertures-in said disk, and pivoted to the friction-shoes, a movable shifting disk mounted on the shaft, screws pivoted to said disk, sleeves pivoted to the outer ends of said levers, and having threaded sockets which receive said screws.
3. In a friction clutch-pulley, the combina tion of a pulley loose upon the shaft and having a lateral flange, a disk fixed upon the shaft carrying friction-shoes adapted to be moved into contact with said flange, levers pivoted upon fulcrums movable laterally of said disk as said levers operate, and having pivotal connection with the friction-shoes, a sleeve pivoted to the outer end of each of said levers having a threaded socket therein, a screw adapted to screw into each of said sockets, and
a shifter mounted upon the shaft to which each of said screws is pivoted.
