Be it'kno-wn that JAMES 080001)-, of'v Somerville, in the county of Middlesex, 4andSt'ate of Massschu. setts, have invented vn. new and usefnlMnchine for Making Eyelets, .of which th'e following is. a full, clear, tundV exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, -rn'akingx a part ol` this specification, in
-which- Figure 1 represents Aperspective view of a maehineembodyin'g my imprpvements. Figure 2'is a vertical transverse section of the-sc me'. Figure is a vertical longitudinal see'tion'of tho cylinder; and
Figureais an enlarged scetio'nslf'view, in detail. Similar letters' indicate like. ps rtslin the several iignres.l
The object-'off my inv'entioh-'is-to produce eyelets' of cust metal'or. composition, and 'to in'ish thenrvby mnobinery, without any intermediate manipulation, by which,l they caribe manufactured very'cheaply, and with l great rapidity.
f'lhe invention consists in the employment of: a series'of annular recesse'sformed on the surface of a rotting cylindcxgjin which 4rjecess es are fitted sliding tnbes,'that surround'ked cylindrical pins, thus forming circular 'spaces for therecept'ion of molten metal properly conducted to the same;Av` Arecprocating longitudinal motion Y is-,gir'ento the said slidi'irgtnbes lay-means of vcross-bars, to-which they urealztaohed, the ends of the` said cross- ,bsrs'iit'tinginoamlgrooyeslformetbon inner sides of the cylinder-heads. y
'In'1 connection withhe-n'hoyeisn secondnxylinder,'o suitablesize,`studddoitssnrfucswith projections;
i, buttons, -or headers, nhich correspond with therecesses in the Erst-named cylinder, and are made to come in' contact with 'the'pr'ojectingends of the partlyfformed eyclet, Jund finish the heads or projecting edges of 'the seme, Referring to the'drsnings, A represents the, bed`,'on' whichl ar'e the standards A A. that supportl the shaft e. f On the' shaft g isa hub, b, to'whichfis "attached a cylinder, B, by arms or other suitable connections. At
"eacliendof the' o'ylyirrder'B, and secured to the standards, is a. circulardislr, C Ci, provided each with a cam- In' these cpm-grooves are fitted the ends of aseresfof creeis-bars, c c' o of", extending through the oyli: der, and parallel tothe shaft a. To these crossfbarsis securede series of cylindrical tubes,ff, so arrange-:l

.d d represent cylindrical pinsv or. rods, secured to the central shaft a, and passing' through the tubes f tol n -point even' with -thesu'rface ofthe cylinder B, lsndu'pon -or overryhihthe said'tn'bes'orecaused to slide. A
The shaft o extends outwards, 'and to' its end is attachede pulleyor wheel, bygavhich the shaft may lie rotated bjr-any suitable poner; l
"Gr-represents o. cylinder, providedon its surface with projections y, as shown .in`g. 4, corresponding in nnmvh'erxrith thefrecesscs in cylinder B, so that, 4during thefrotstion or revolution of the cylinder, every projec-l .tion wQill oomeexactlyfop'posite 'a corresponding recess', and press against the partially-projected and of the ,cast
l eyelet, so as to orm'the head or projecting` odgesef the same.
H represents a-thiokme't'nl plate, cove'rin'g ap'ortionl of the cylinder B, and secured et each end to the ggg.
urinary diske said chamber e' bymennsof a tube, le, leading to the chamber or vessel M, in nhichthe metal is melted.
N, iig. 1,' represents a force-pump, for-ircing air-or steamthrongh the tube P to the meltngwessel M, for
.the purpose of supplying additional pressure-to the metal in its 'passage to tle cylinder B, if found necessary.'
-Iustead ot' a rotating cylinder,v`a.level plate may he used,"in-'which may be fitted stationary pins and'sliding tubes, inrecems formed in the saidplate, Where ahreciprocating motion'may'bc employed, instead'of. a rotating. motion, tc operate the sliding tubes. -A
The operation is' as follows Cr'Q, jfQjl'the nnderside'lof the plete H isiformed arecess or spa'ce,.z', constituting s chsmber for d the recept-ion oisthe melted metallof which the ey'elet'is' to be formed. 'The urelted'- metal is conducted to Athe- -The metal or composition, being melted in the vessel M, will pass through the tube k to the chamber z', covering a portion of the su'rf'ace'ol` cylinder B, the latter being duly rotated. i
At this pointthe tubes ff', &c., are withdrawn into the cylinder, to the'required depthof the eyelet toA be` formed. l i
By the action of the cross-rods in the cam-groov, the tubes commence to withdraw as the recesses entelthe4 chamber z at one side, as sho'wn in iig. 4, so that, in their passage throu'ghthe space formed by chamber z', the'- tubes will be suddenly retracted, `and. so create a vacuum,I into which 4the Imelted metal is at once forced. As the cylinder continues its'rotation, the recesses pass by the edges of -theplate H, thus'smoothing oli' the outer ends of the metal eyelets inthe same. The partially-formed eyelets, retaining their position in the recesses, are carried around in the cylinder, becomingeooled in the mean time, until they approach tlieprojections on the cylinderGr, when the camfgroovo commences to force out gradually the tubes y",nwhich causes the now cooled metal to 3roject suiciently from the recesses to ferm the head of the eyelet. l, After passing this point, the cam is sg formed as to throw out the tubesfto their fullest extent, land thus eject the completed eyelet from the cylinder. The
tubef will remain in this position until it again enters the chamber The cylinder may bemade oirany size required, and `contain as many recesses as can properly accommodate the number yof pins and sliding tubes to be operated.
If the melting-vessel Mis made air-tight, the vacuum caused .by the running out of the metal maybe filled from the arpump N, and additional pressuremay be used .by the same means, if found necessary, but, under ordinary circumstances, the metal will runfi'eely into the chamber z'.
The outer ends of the recesses in the cylinder B may be countersunk, to aid in forming the heads of the eyelets, if foundne'cessary. l Having thus described my invention, 4what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-l-' 1. Making eyelets from`cast metal, by `the means substantially as described. 4 j 2. The fixed pins or rods'd, in combination with the sliding tubesf, as and for the purpose set forth. 3. yThe combination of the fixed pins or rods d, the sliding tubesf, and the cylinder B, as described.
4. The combination oi' the"crossbars c, the sliding tubesf, and the cam-plates or disksC C?, asv and for'the purposespeciiied. 4
5. The cylinder Gr,y provided with the projections y, as and forthe .purpose set forth. 4 y 6. The chamber z', formed in the plate H, in combination witli the cylinder B, as described. 7. A cast-metal eye-let,-coustructed by the means substantially as above described. 4 In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in thepresence of two subscribing witnesses.
