VICTOR H. SLINAOK, OE PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE PENNSYLVANIA GLOBE GAS LIGHT COMPANY, OF PHILADEL- PHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
FIXTUREv FOR LIGHTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 776,361, dated November 29, 1904.4
, Application iiled April 2l, 1904. Serial No. 204,172. (No model.)
To c/ZJ, whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, Vieron H. SLINACK, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fixtures for Lights, of which the following is a specification. y
Objects of the present invention are to pro- IO vide for the use of automatic gas-regulators on gas-lights, to provide for the quick and ready removal of a defective or inactive regulator and for its replacement by an operative regulator, and to protect the glassware, man- AI5 tle, and other parts that may be present from accidental injury, such as might and probably would occur if they had to be handled or removed while the change of regulators is effected.
To these and other ends hereinafter set forth the invention, stated in general terms, comprises a carrier interposed between the gassupply and superstructure of the burner and provided with couplings or connections for detachably engaging' the regulator; and the invention further comprises the improvements to be presently described and finally claimed.
The nature, characteristic features. and scope of the invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, and in which the iigure is a side view, principally in section, illustrating a carrier embodying features of my invention inapplication to a g'as-light.
In the drawing, 1 is a carrier provided with couplings or connections 2and 3. The coupling 2 consists of an externally-beveled projection rising from a bolt-head i and threaded, as at 5, for engagement with a thread formed on a ring 6, in which the lower portion of the arm terminates. The coupling' or connection 3 consists of a thimble 7, provided with a gas-orifice 8 and with a milled edge 9 and externally-threaded portion 10. The externally-threaded portion 10 engages with a thread 11, formed on the inside ofl a ring 12, formed or provided at the upper portion of the carrier 1. This ring' 12 is provided with a thread 13 for the reception of the Bunsen tube 14, and the bolt-head 4 is threaded for the reception of the base or gas-supply 15 of the burner. This Bunsen tube carries the gallery 16, the mantle 17, and the various accessories when present, such as the chimney 18, the'chimney-coyer 19, and the glass shade 20. The gas-supply 15 may be provided with the valve or cock 21.
22 is an automatic gas-regulator provided with members 23 and 24: of couplings.
In use the thimble may be screwed upward so that its thread clears the ring 12, and it may then be lifted and by interlocking the members 25 and 26 of a bayonet-joint held up, so that the member 24 of the regulator can be placed upon the projection 6, whereupon the thimble 9 can be dropped over the coupling member 23 and then turned so that its thread engages the thread on the ring 12, and in this way the regulator is connected or coupled in position. By again screwing the thimble 7 clear of the thread on the ring 12 the thimble can be lifted and the regulator readily removed.
The joints for the coupling may be ground, if desired, and they are easily made tight by turning' the thimble, as described.
From the foregoing description it is apparcnt that a defective or inoperative regulator may be readily removed and replaced by an operative one. This is im portant, because the change is often required to be made in darkness or in positions exposed to the wind and weather, and, furthermore, the change is made without removing or in any way disturbing the fittings of the superstructure, which, especially the mantle, are fragile, and they are therefore protected from breakage and injury.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains that modiiications may be made in details without departing from the spirit thereof. Hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction and arrangement of parts hereinabove set forth, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings; but,
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A carrier provided with means for attaching' it between a Bunsen tube and a gassupply and with a projection constituting one member of a coupling and with a thimble constituting the other member of a coupling and having screw and thread connection with the carrier, substantially as described.
2. A carrier provided with two rings, a bolthead adapted for attachment to a gas-supply and screwed into one of said rings and provided with a tapered projection constituting a coupling member, and a thimble constituting a coupling member and provided with a gasoriice and with an external thread for engaging and disengaging a thread on the other ring, substantially as described.
3. A carrier provided with means for attaching it between a Bunsen tube and a gassupply and with coupling members arranged the one above the other with a space between, substantially as described.
II. In combination a carrier having arms provided with coupling members, and an automatic gas-regulator arranged between said arms and provided with coupling members adapted to cooperate with the first-mentioned coupling members, substantially as described.
5. The combination of a carrier provided with arms having coupling members, a gasregulator interposed between the arms and having coupling members coperating with the first-mentioned members, a burner-base which supports the carrier, and a superstructure including' a mantle supported on the carrier, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name:
VICTOR H. SLINACK. Vitnesses:
