IMPROVED HEMP-BREAK.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, DANIEL F. WALLACE, of Ripley, Brown county, in the'State of Ohio, have made new and useful Improvements in Hemp and Flax-Breaks; and I hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the drawings that accompany and form a part of these specifications.
The object of my invention is to provide a machine for breaking hemp or flair, to'be operated by hand or other power, simple in its structure, and at the same time efficient in its operation.
Figure 1 is a perspective view.
Figure 2, top view of mymachine, with the upper part or cover removed.
Figure 3, view of the spring-rest D, when arranged in sections.
Letter A, frame supported on four standards; letter B, rotating shaft resting on the frame A'; letters 0 C, beating-wings attached to the shaft B; letter D, spring-rest for thc'hemp; letters E E, springs operating on the rest D; letters F F, inclines resting on the frame A, and provided with inclined slots it, in which the ends of the rest, D, are supported and allowed to move back and forth letter H, top or cover of machine, that may be removed, when desired.
The beating-wings are made with arms extending from the shaft, attached to which is abar, Gr, rounded on the edge or side that comes in contact with the hemp. The intervening space between the bar G and the shaft is filled by a. board, or otherwise, thus forming a wing.
The advantage I claim for a wing ovcra bar alone is, tlwreis much less danger of the hemp catching by partially winding around the bar, and serve also to blow away the shives as they are beaten out.
The rest, D, operating in the inclined slots, may be divided into two or more sections, as shown in fig. 3, so that several persons may work at the same 1nacl1ine--one 1nay be feeding a full bundle, while another may he finishing on the adjoining section. i
The springs E E may be made of wood or steel, one end being made fast to the cross-bar of the frame, and the other, striking obliquely against the rest I), keeps the hemp in contact with the beating-wings.
By tlie arrangement of the rest, D, in the inclined slots'z'i, the hemp will beforced against it with consider able power, as the bearing comes partly in a dowmvard direction, and not entirely on the springs, consequently meeting with more resistance, thus breaking the hemp very effectually, and the wings at the some time blowing or carrying away theshives.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The beating-wings C, in combination with the rest, D, operating in the inclined slots 1', and provided with the springs E, u'hen arranged substantially as described and shown.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in-the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DANIEL F. WALLACE.
