UNDERFRAMING FOR CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 775,485, dated November 22, 1904.
Application filed April 20, 1904:.
To all whom, it nwty concern.-
Be it known that we, HENRY C. WILLIAM- SON and HERMAN PRIES, citizens of the United States, and residents of Michigan City, county of Laporte, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Underframing for Cars, of which the following is a specification and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
The object of this invention is to provide a metal underframing for cars, particularly freight-cars, which while being comparatively light and inexpensive is possessed of great rigidity and strength.
The invention consists in the structure hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of a car constructed in accordance with our invention, the location of the section being indicated by the line 1 1, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section on the line 2 20f Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is a detail section on the line 1 4. of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a perspective of one of the parts.
The floor of a freight-car is shown at and a portion'of the end sheathing thereof at 16.
At 17 is represented the usual end sill, and at 18 the dead-wood timber.
The center and draft sills illustrated in the drawings form the subject of an application for patent filed by us concurrently with the application for this patent. The center sills comprise a pair of channelbars 19 20, their legs or flanges extending outwardly toward the sides of the car, the upper pair being flush with the lower face of the flooring 15. These center sills abut against the end sills of the car and are secured thereto by brackets 21, having two faces disposed at right angles to each other, one of them being seated against the inner face of the center sill and the other against the inner face of the end sill, the brackets being secured.to both of such sills by suitable rivets or bolts.
The center sills 19 20 are tied together by Serial No. 203,981- (No model.)
straps 22, having their ends turned to rest against the inner faces of the sills and provide means for riveting thereto. afford supports for the nailing-blocks 23, to which the flooring is secured.
The center sills ,19 20 rest upon and are secured to the body-bolster, which, as shown, comprises the Z-shaped side plates 24 25, the top plates 26, 27, and 28, and the bottom plates 29 and 30. The draft-sills also take the form of vertically-disposed channel-bars, as shown at 31 32, the upper pair of flanges of which lie against the lower pair of flanges of the center sills and are attached thereto. These draft-sills are in sections, the end sections extending from the front faces of the dead-wood blocks 18 to the adjacent bodybolster and the intermediate section, represented at 33, abutting against the inner faces of the body-bolsters. Each end section and the adjacent intermediate section ofthe draftsills are tied together by plates 34, riveted to the under side thereof and extending across and below the body-bolster and affording a seat for the center plate 35, which is attached thereto.
The intermediate sills 36 and side sills 37 are alsochannel-plates vertically disposed, the upper legor flange of each being flush with the under face of the flooring 15. These sills rest upon the body-bolster, the side sills being at the ends thereof and the intermediate sills being substantially midway between the side sills and the adjacent member of the center sills. secured brackets, as 38, upon which are seated nailing-blocks 40 41, the latter block also carrying the framing-posts 12 43, which may be mortised into it, as shown. The side tie-rods, here shown as vertical and represented at 44, extend through the side nailing-strips L1 and the brackets 38, upon which they-are seated, the nuts applied to the lower ends of such rods being turned up against the under faces of such brackets.
The several sills are tied together by straps 45, as numerous as may be desired, riveted to the lower flanges of the side and intermediate sills and the draft-sills, so that all of the sills These straps To each of these sills there are cooperate togetherto stiflen each other and check any tendency to lateral swaying or buckling.
The usual needle-bar or cross-tie beam is present and is in the form of an inverted-T beam, as shown at 4:6. This needle-beam is supported by means of brackets 47 from the side, intermediate, and draft sills. Each of these brackets is comprised of two bars, preferably in the form of angles, as shown, having their lower ends riveted to the web of the needle-beam, their upper ends being spread apart and riveted to the lower flanges of the sills. Queen-posts 48 are secured to the lateral flanges of the needle-beam 46 and depend therefrom, which with the brackets L7 and need le-beam comprise the struts of the trusses, of which the sills comprise the compression members, the tension members or truss-rods 4E9 bearing upwardly against the queen-posts and passing over suitable saddle-posts 50, mounted upon the body-bolster and extending through the end sills 17 and dead-wood 18 in the usual manner.
The truss-rod saddle-posts 50 are made with two legs, each of which rests upon the top plate 28 of the body-bolster near its edges, suitable rivets passing through the feet of these legs, the top plates of the body-bolster, and the upper flanges of its side plates.
We claim as our invention 1. In an underframing for cars, in combination, center, side, and intermediate sills of metal, a metal needle-beam, and brackets depending from the sills and carrying the needle-beam.
2. In an underframing for cars. in combination, center, side, and intermediate sills of metal. a straight needle-beam, and brackets depending from the sills and carrying the needle-beam.
3. In an underframing for cars, 1n combination, center, side, and intermediate sills of metal, a metal needle-beam, and brackets formed of angle-bars secured to the needle- 45 beam and having their upper ends spread apart and secured to the sills.
4. In an underframing for cars, in combination, center, side, and intermediate sills of metal, a metal needle-beam, brackets depending from the sills and carrying the needlebeam, queen-posts depending from the needle-beam, and truss-rods bearing against the queen-posts.
5. In an underframing for cars, in combination, end sills, metal longitudinal sills, hollow metal body-bolsters secured to the latter sills, metal needle-beams, brackets depending from the longitudinal sills and supportingv the needle-beams, queen-posts depending from the needle-beams, truss-rod saddles mounted on the body-bolsters and comprising a pair of legs resting one over each side member 01 the bolster, and trussrods bearing against the queen-posts and truss-rod saddles, and secured to the end sills.-
6. In an underframing for cars, in combition, end sills; metal center, side, and intermediate sills abutting against and secured to the end sills; body-bolsters secured to the lower faces of the longitudinal sills; sectional metal draft-sills extending from the ends of the car to the body-bolsters and between the bolsters, and being secured to the center sills; and tie-plates uniting the end and center sections of the draft-sills and located below the body-bolsters.
7. In an underframing for cars, in combination, center, side, and intermediate sills of metal, a metal needle beam, and brackets formed of bars secured to the needle-beam and having their upper ends spread apart and secured to the sills.
