SOLOMON LAMBERT STUART, OF VENTURA, CALIFORNIA.
SANITARY CABIN ET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 775,410, dated November 22, 1904.
Application iiled November 28, 1903. Serial No. 183.084. (No model.)
To (LM wiz/om, it 771,041/ concern:
Be it known that I, SOLOMON LAMBERT STU- ART, of the city of Ventura, in the county of Ventura, in the State of California, have invented a new and Improved Sanitary Cabinet Specially Adapted for Use by Females, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description or specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, and to the letters marked thereon.
The object of my invention-is to provide a portable device which, while capable of being employed as a commode for general use, is also, by means of the arrangements Wherewith the device is constructed and by means also of the attachment thereto, further adapted to be used by females as a reclining-bench for alfordingaccess to the vaginal and rectal orifices for the entrance thereinto of a syringe, douche, or other instrument.
My device can also be used as a' chair, all as hereinafter set forth v.upon the annexed drawings.
Figure l is a plan of the device'constituting my invention opened out to its full length and adapted as a reclining-bench for use by females. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same,
showing the parts folded together in the position they occupy when not in use. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section at the center of the device; and Fig. 5 is a side elevation with part of the side broken out, showing the constituent parts opened out in readiness for being reclined upon by the female, the figure also showing the top member in a dotted inclined position, whereby the device is also capable of being used as a chair. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of my said device arranged 'as more specially adapted for use by surgeon and medical practitioners, wherein it is necessary to have the top of the cabinet device on which a female is reclined for operative purposes at a higherlevel than is requisite for domestic use alone. Fig. 7 is a front elevation corresponding to Fig. 6, 'and Fig. 8 is a rear elevation of Figs. 6 and 7 In Figs. l to 5 of the drawings of my device the cabinet proper is marked A, and it is preferably constructed with an opening B at the lower part of each side and end thereof, which, as shown in the drawings, is an arched opening. The cabinet is provided with a iiat partition C, upon which rests the receptacle D, whereinto fecal and urinary discharges are deposited and whereinto the liquid used in a vaginal or rectal syringe or douche is discharged or caught. In the front of the cabinet is a hinged door E, which on being opened, as shown in Fig. 5, affords access to the receptacle D for removal, for discharge of its contents, and for replacement. The top of the cabinet A consists of a seat-hole F, which for the sake of greater convenience is fitted with a removable seat Cr, fitted thereinto, having a smaller seat-hole H therein adapted for use by children. At the upper part of the rear of the cabinet A there is hinged the lid I, which can be folded out horizontally, as shown in full lines in Figs. l and 5, or which may be held in an inclined position by the straps J, as shown at. Fig. 5. The front interior part of the cabinet A is provided with a pair of foot-rests K K, each of which is held by a pivot L in abracket M, fastened within the cabinet A, as more particularly shown in Fig. 5. The foot-rests are each constructed with a second pivot N, whereby complete facility is offered to a female reclining upon the device and using it for the purpose hereinbefore mentioned to move and adjust the foot-rests into any position of ease.
For the purpose of giving support to the lid or cover I the rear part of the cabinet A is hinged at one edge to the adjacent side of the cabinet, so that it can be opened outward into the angular position shown at Figs. l and 5, in which position the lid or cover I rests upon its upper highest part, while its lower part rests upon the floor, (represented in Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5 of the drawings by the line ca.)
The device, as shown at Figs. 6, 7, and 8, is in all essential respects the same as the device hereinbefore described and shown at Figs. 1 to 5, with the exceptionthat in these Figs. 6, 7, and 8 the said device is shown as adapted to surgical use, for which purpose it is necessary that the top of the device should be of about the height of a surgical operating-table. For this purpose and with this end in view of the improved sanitary cabinet, being at or about the height of an ordinary surgical operating-table, it is mounted upon legs O, which are preferably of about such length as will raise the top of the cabinet A about thirtythree inches above the Hoor o f the room or apartment upon which it stands. The rear part or member Pl of the device is attached at one side or end to one of the sides by hinges Q, so that the rear part P can be swung outward rearwardly into the angular position shown at Fig. 6, corresponding to the position of the same member shown at Figs. 1 and 5, and to provide for the eiicient support of the hinged part or member P when thus swung out into the position shown at Fig. 6 in dotted lines, corresponding to the position of the same member in Figs. l and 5, the legs O of the member P, shown at Fig. 8, are di- Vided into two half-legs, as indicated by the lines fr and y in Fig. 8; but one only of the legs O may be divided, so that while one half of each rear leg O is a permanent vertical support for the body of the cabinet under all conditions the'other half of each such rear leg being permanently attached to the rear Inernber P constitutes an independent support for that member when in the opened-out position shown in dotted lines at Fig. 6.
The foot-rests K for the device shown at Figs. 6 to 8 may be the same as those shown at Figs. l to 5; but instead thereof they may consist of horizontal sliding bars, as shown partly in dotted and partly in full lines in Fig. 6. The foot-rests in these special constructions constitute no part of my present invention, excepting as in combination with other parts of my device.
By preference my device is also constructed with a cleat Q at the front of the lid I, as shown in dotted lines in the outfolded position, Fig. l, and in front elevation at Fig. 7.
Having now described the nature of my said invention and the best system, Inode, or manner which I am at present acquainted with for carrying the same into practical effect, I desire to observe in conclusion that what I consider to be novel and original, and therefore claim as the invention to be` secured to me by Letters Patent, is as follows:
l. The sanitary cabinet consisting of the combination of ,thel body part thereof, the hinged rear member constituting the support for the hinged lid or cover, the hinged lid or` cover, the straps, the foot-rests, the hinged door at front, the flat partition, the receptacle, substantially as set forth.
2. The sanitary cabinet consisting of the combination of the body part thereof, the hinged lid or cover, the cleat on the hinged lid or cover, the long legs for supporting the cabinet, the foot-rests, the hinged door at the front of the device, the hinged rear part formed in one member, the divided leg, the hinges, the fiat partition, the receptacle, substantially as hereinbefore described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SOLOMON LAMBERT STUART.
