EDIVIN GILBERT OCONNOR, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
TROUSERS STRETCHER AND CREASER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 774,267, dated November 8, 1904.
Application filed May 14,1903. Serial No. 157.166. (N0 model.)
To (LZZ 7071 0711 it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN GILBERT OCoN- NOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Trousers Creaser and Presser, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in trousers stretchers and creasers, and has for its object to provide a cheap, simple, and efficient device by which a pair of trousers may be held and stretched, so that all the wrinkles will be removed and a crease pressed in the back and front of the leg portions.
IVith these objects in view my invention comprises two pairs of clampingstrips or slats, between which the front and rear portions of the trousers are firmly pressed and held together to form the crease and held apart transversely by spreader-bars to remove the wrinkles, said spreader bars being also clamped in their adjusted position.
My invention also comprises certain details of construction and novelties of combination and arrangement, as will be fully described in the following specification and pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 isa view showing the practical application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view drawn about on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, the trousers beingremoved. Fig. 3 is'a transverse sectional view drawn on about the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4c is a detail view of one of the spreader-bars.
In carrying out my invention I employ two pairs of parallel-arranged strips or bars A B CD, between each pair of which are placed the front and rear portions, respectively, of the trousers-legs, as clearly shown in the drawings, and to force and hold each pair of strips together to form the crease I employ clamps Gr, substantially U-shaped, and in one end of each of which is provided a threaded opening through which operates a thumb screw G, having its inner end enlarged to form a ball, as shown at E, and which enlarged ends of the screws fit into and are held in socketplates F, securely fastened upon one of each pair of strips, and upon the opposite strip of each pair and directly in,alinement with the socketplates are held a series of plates L, some of which have threaded pins L projecting therefrom, while the others have smooth or non-threaded pins L but each of the pins is designed to engage a socket M, formed in the clamps in the end opposite the screws. It will be readily seen that when the strips and clamps are arranged as described, and shown particularly in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the strips of each pair may be quickly forced toward or withdrawn from each other by operating the screws and that they will at all times be held in position. After the trousers have been clamped between the strips it is desired to force the strips apart transversely in order to stretch and remove the wrinkles in the legs of the trousers, and for this purpose I employ a series of spreader-bars S, each having one end provided with an open slot 0 for engagement with a pin L and its opposite end with a closed slot P, through which works the threaded pin L, the latter having a thumb-nut R operating thereon, which when screwed up against the bar tightly holds the latter from slipping after the pair of strips have been forced apart transversely, and it will be readily seen that byholding the pair of strips adjacent the closed end of the bar and pushing against the said end of the latter the strips will be forced apart transversely, and then by tightening up the thumb-nuts R all the parts will remain in their adjusted positions. In practice I prefer to alternate the threaded and non-threaded pins upon the slotsthat is to say, I arrange two of the plates having the threaded and one plate having a nonthreaded pin upon one strip and one threaded pin and two non-threaded pins upon the opposite strip, or vice versa, so that in stretching the trousers pressure may be applied from both the front and rear portions of the gar-' ment. By having the one end of the bars provided with a closed slot each bar will be retained upon its respective pin and all danger of their being lost or misplaced is avoided. I also prefer to make each strip or strips in sections and hinging them together, as shown at H, so that the device can be compactly folded when not in use.
From the foregoing it will be seen that l 1 provide an exceedingly cheap, simple, and 0011- l venient device For carrying out all of the ob jects heretofore mentioned.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device of the kind described, thecom i bination of the parallel strips arranged in l pairs, socket-plates arranged upon one strip of each pair, plates carrying pins arranged upon the adjacent strip of each pair, clamps having thumb-screws, which are arranged for engagement with the said socket-plates, said clamps having socket portions, for engagement with the said pins and means for holding the pairs of strips apart transversely, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the kind described, the combination of the parallel strips arranged in pairs, socket-plates secured upon one strip of each pair, plates carrying pins secured to the adjacent strip of each pair, the pins project ing from the alternate plates being threaded, clamps having thumb-screws, the inner ends of which are enlarged and adapted to be held within the sockets of the said plates, said clamps also having socket portions into which fit the said pins, spreader-bars having an open l slot in one end and a closed slot in their opposite ends, said open-slotted ends being arranged for engagement with the non-threaded l pins and the closed slotted ends, encircling i the threaded pins and clam ping-nuts operating upon the threaded pins and engaging the spreader-bars substantially as described.
3. In a device of the kind described, the combination of the sectional parallel strips arranged in pairs, hinges uniting the abutting ends of the strips, socket-plates arranged upon one strip of each pair, and plates carrying pins arranged upon the opposite strip of each pair, clamps having thumb-screws engaging said socket-plates, and socket portions engaging the said pins, spreader-bars engaging the pins and thumb nuts operating upon the threaded pins and engaging the spreader-bars substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a device of the kind described, the combination of the parallel clamping-strips arranged in pairs, pins projecting from one strip of each pair, spreader-bars engaging the pins and adapted for holding the strips apart, transversely, each of said bars having an open slot at one end, and a closed slot at its opposite end, means for holding the bars in their adjusted positions, and clamps for engagement with the said strips, all arranged substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I h ave signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
