SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 774,240, dated November 8, 1904. Application filed June 15,1904- Serial No. 212,737- (No model.)

Be it known that we, JAMES G. FAIRBANKS and GEORGE L. SAUER, citizens of the United States, residing at Marion, in the county of Marion and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Boom, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in excavating and dredging machines, and has for its principal object to provide a novel form of boom-operating mechanism whereby the boom may be swung from side to side without undue strain and in a position of any angular adjustment of said boom.
A further object of the invention is to provide a boom-swinging mechanism in which the connections through which the swinging movement is imparted will always maintain the same relation to each other without regard to the effective radius of the boom.
\Vith these and other objects in view, as will more fully hereinafter appear, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportions, size, and minor details of the structure may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of suflicient of an excavatingmachine or dredge to illustrate the application thereto of a boom and boom-swinging mechanism constructed and arranged in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of the lower pivot-eye to which the truss members are connected. Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation of the same.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
In swinging booms of that general class in which the boom is secured to a turn-table it is usual to employ a mechanism for turning the table and the boom as a whole; but where at a fixed point in the length of the boom and the vertical position of the point 0f.,attach ment will of course change with the adj ustment of the boom to different angular positions.
In carrying out the present invention it is designed to employ a boom-swinging apparatus which will be equally effective to all positions of adjustment of the boom and the strain will in all cases be the same, rendering it unnecessary to take up or let out the line to accommodate the varying angular positions of the boom.
The boom 1 in the present'instance includes a pair of spaced trusses that are connected at their lower ends by'an eye 2, the latter encircling a Vertically-disposed pivot-pin 3, that is carried by the framework of the excavating-machine or dredge and permits swinging movement of the-boom to any position. The truss members are further pivoted to the eye member by a horizontally-disposed pivot pin or pins 4, that will permit the adjustment of the boom to different angular positions when it becomes necessary to alter the effective radius of said boom. In other respects the boom is of any ordinary construction, and the form shown in the present instance is merely typical, it being understood that the invention may be applied to booms of very many different constructions.
The framework of the machine supports a pair of horizontally-disposed bars 5, arranged in an arcuate line struck from the aXis of the boom pivot-pin 3, and these two bars are spaced from each other by spacing blocks or bolts 6, These bars serve as supports for vertically-disposed shafts or pins 7, on which are mounted a plurality of sheaves 8, serving as guides for chains or ropes 9. After passing around the sheaves the ropes or chains 9 are led partly around sheaves 10 and guided to winding-drums or other devices of similar character, which form no part of the inven tion.
Extending upwardly from the platform is a smaller frame 11, which may be of any suitable character and includes a horizontallydisposed cross-bar 12, that is arranged adjacent to and which may form a part of the structural work of the excavating-machine, steam-shovel, dredge, crane, or other device to which the invention is applied. To these two cross-bars are secured metallic bars 16, which maybe held in place by a timber or beam 1'7, and the outer ends of said plates are provided with openings for the passage of a pivot-pin 18, that is in the vertical plane of the axis of the pivot-pin 3. This pivotpin also passes through a bar 20, arranged at the upper end of an arm 21, and forms the center of movement of said arm. The lower end of the arm 21 passes between the space at one end of the bar, and its lower end carries an adjusting-clamp 22, which may be moved to any position in the length of the arm and securely held thereto, and said clamp carries at each side a clevis 24 for connection with the cables or chain 9. The main boom may be raised or lowered to assume different angles to the horizontal, but the angle of the arm 21 is practically constant, especially as regards its relation to the cable 9 and the cable-guiding sheaves, so that no matter what the angular position of the boom proper may be the clevises will remain in approximately the horizontal plane of the sheaves 8, and the pull exerted by one or other of the cables or chains 9 will be in a direct line at all times, and there will be no danger of the cable or chain slipping from its guiding-pulleys, nor is there anything to interfere with free lateral swing of the arm and boom and free vertical swinging of said boom.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is- 1. The combination with a swinging boom, adjustable to varying angles to the horizontal, of a pivotally-mounted arm having a slidable connection with the boom, and means connected to said arm for swinging the boom in a horizontal plane.
2. The combination with a swinging boom adjustable to varying angles to the horizontal, of an arm pivoted in the horizontal plane of movement of the boom and having a slidable connection with said boom, and mechanism connected to the arm for swinging said boom in a horizontal plane.
3. The combination with a swinging boom adjustable to varying angular positions, of an arm having its upper end pivoted in a vertical plane coincident with the axis of swinging movement of the boom, said boom having a slidable connection with the arm, a flexible operating device connected to the arm.
L. The combination with a swinging boom including a pair of spaced boom members, of a pivotally-mounted arm extending between said members, and a boom-swinging mechanism slidably connected to the arm.
5. The combination with a swinging boom including a pair of spaced boom members, of an arm, the upper portion of which is pivoted in the vertical plane of swinging movement of the boom, said arm extending between the spaced members of the boom, and flexible operating members connected to the lower portion of said arm.
6. The combination with a swinging boom, of an arm connected thereto, a plurality of guiding-sheaves arranged on a curved line, and a flexible connecting means extending around said sheaves and secured at one end to the arm.
7. The combination with aswinging boom, of an arm connected thereto, a plurality of sheaves arranged in a curved row, and cables extending around said sheaves and connected to the lower end of said arm.
8. The combination with a swinging boom, of a plurality of guiding-sheaves arranged in a curved line, an arm having its upper end in a vertical plane coincident with the axis of swinging movement of the boom, said arm extending through a portion of the boom, clevises secured to the lower end of the arm, and flexible operating devices guided around the sheaves and connected to said clevises.
