Be it known that I, VVILLIAM T. HULsoHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Battlecreek, county of Calhoun, and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baling-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in baling-presses.
It relates particularly to improvements in baling-chambers for baling-presses.
The main object of this invention is to provide an improved baling-chamber for balingpresses from which the completed bale is automatically ejected.
Further objects and objects relating to structural details will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the follow ing specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure embodying the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings,forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a detail side elevation view of a structure embodying the features of my invention in its closed position. Fig. 2 is a detail side elevation view of the structure appearing in Fig. 1 in its open position. Fig. 3 is an end elevation view looking from the left of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 4 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail longitudinal sectional view taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 3, the position of the movable parts in their open position being indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 6 is a detail cross-sectional view taken on line 6 6 of Fig. 1, the position of the side walls D in their open position being indicated by dotted lines.
In the drawings the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section-lines, and similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, the frame A of my improved baling-press is preferably made of angle-iron. The hopper or feed portion (See Fig. 6.)

A is provided with suitable walls, which are rigidly secured to the frame. The portion of the chamber in which the bale is formed is provided with hinged side walls B. These side walls B are hinged at their tops on suitable pivoted rods b. The bottom C is hinged at its forward end on a suitable pivot-rod, as 0. (See Figs. 1, 2, and 5.) The top a and the rear end of the baling-chamber are preferably formed of a single piece of sheet metal or the like and are rigidly secured to the frame. Upwardly-projecting pins 6 are provided on the bottom side rails of the frame to limit the outward swing of the side walls. Blocks 6, having inclined faces adapted to engage the bottom of the side walls and force them inwardly, are carried by the bottom 0. As the bottom is forced upwardly in closing these cam-blocks engage the walls and return them to their closed or operative position. When the bottom drops down, the side walls B are released and are free to swing outward, thereby releasing the bale, which ordinarily drops freely from the chamber. The bottom is closed and retained in its closed position by a pivoted yoke-shaped lever D. This lever is pivoted on the rod cl at the rear of the baling-chamber. Links D connect the arms of the lever to the rear end of the bottom C. The arms of the lever D are curved at D, so that when the bottom is in its closed position the pivot-points of the links D to the lever and to the bottom C are carried past the center or pivot-point of the lever D, thereby locking the same. When it is desired to open the chamber, the lever is actuated until the pivot-points of the links are carried past the pivot-point of the lever, when the weight of the bottom wall 0 and the bale will open the chamber. The side walls, being released, are free to swing outwardly, so that the bale is entirely freed. However, to insure the ejection of the bale and to start the same from the baling-oharnber I provide an arm (Z, which is adapted to operate through a suitable slot a in the top and rear walls, of the chamber. The arm (Z is secured to the lever D and is actuated thereby. This arm as the lever D is moved upwardly striking through the slot engages the bale and forces the same downwardly should it from any cause fail to drop freely from the chamber when the chamber is opened. A pair of rearwardly-projecting arms 1/ are secured to the rear end of the bottom U of the baling-ehamber. When the operating-lever D is in its lower or closed position, it engages under these arms, thereby supporting the bottom.
With the parts arranged as described after a bale is completed the lower end of the lever I) is pulled outwardly, thereby releasing the bottom and also the side walls. The bale thus released ordinarily drops down with the bottom and slides therefrom. 11" any portion of the bale should be engaged in the chamber, it is released and forced therefrom by the arm (Z, as described.
My improved baling-chamber is very economical to produce, is very easy to operate, and also very quickly operated-that is, it may be quickly opened and the bale removed and again closed.
I have illustrated and described my improved baling-chamber in the form preferred by me on account of its structural simplicity and convenience in operation. I am, however, aware that it is capable of considerable variation in structural details without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a balingehamber, the combination of a suitable frame; side walls for said ehan'iber pivoted at their tops; a bottom for said chamber, pivoted at its forward end; suitable stops on said frame for said side walls; blocks having inclined faces carried by said bottom adapted to engage said side walls to return them to and retain them in their operative position when said bottom is closed; a yokelike lever, the arms of which are curved rearwardly pivotallysccured to said frame; links secured to said bottom and to the arms of said lever; rearwardlyprojecting arms on said bottom adapted to be engaged by said lever when it isin its closed position; a slot in the top and rear walls of said baling-ehamber; and an arm carried by said lever arranged to move through said slot when said lever is actuated, for the purpose specified.
2. In a baling-chamber, the combination of a suitable frame; side walls for said chamber pivoted at their tops; a bottom for said chamber pivoted at its forward end; suitable stops on said framefor said side walls; blocks having inclined faces carried by said bottom adapted to engage said side walls to return them to and retain them in their operative position when said bottom is closed; a yokelike lever, the arms of which are curved rearwardly pivotally secured to said frame; links secured to said bottom and to the arms of said lever; rearwardly-projecting arms on said bottom adapted to be engaged by said lever when it is in its closed position; for the purpose specified.
3. In a baling-chamber, the combination of a suitable frame; side Walls for said chamber pivoted at their tops; a bottom for said chamber pivoted at its forward end; blocks having inclined faces carried by said bottom adapted to engage said side walls to return them to and retain them in their operative position when said bottom is closed; a yokelike lever, the arms of which are curved rearwardly pivotally secured to said frame; links secured to said bottom and to the arms of said lever; rearwardly projecting arms on said bottom adapted to be engaged by said lever when it is in its closed position; a slot in the top and rear walls of said baling-chamber; and an arm carried by said lever arranged to move through said slot when said lever is actuated, for the purpose specified.

In a baling-cha-mber, the combination of a suitable frame; side walls for said chamber pivoted at their tops; a bottom for said chamber pivoted at its forward end; blocks having inclined faces carried by said bottom adapted to engage said side walls to return them to and retain them in their operative position, when said bottom is closed; a yoke-like lever, the arms of which are curved rearwardly, pivotally-secured to said frame; links secured to said bottom and to the arms of said lever; rearwardly-projecting arms on said bottom adapted to be engaged by said lever when it is in its closed position, for the purpose specified.
5. In a baling-chamber, the combination of a suitable frame; side walls for said chamber, pivoted at their tops; a bottom for said chamber pivoted at its forward end; blocks having inclined faces carried by said bottom adapted to engage said side walls to return them to and retain them in their operative position, when said bottom is closed; a pivoted lever; a link secured to said bottom and to said lever; a slot in the top and rear walls of said baling-chamber; and an arm carried by said lever arranged to move through said slot when said lever is actuated, for the purpose specified.
6. In a baling-ehamber, the combination of a suitable frame; side walls for said chamber pivoted at their tops; a bottom for said chamber pivoted at its forward end; blocks having inclined faces carried by said bottom adapted to engage said side Walls to return them to and retain them in their operative position when said bottom is closed; a pivoted lever; a link secured to said bottom and to said lever; for the purpose specified.
7. In a baling-chamber, the combination of side walls pivoted at their tops; a bottom pivoted at its forward end; means carried by said bottom adapted to return said side walls to their operative position, when said bottom is closed; a pivoted lever; a link secured to IIO said bottom and to said lever, for the purpose specified.
8. In a baling-chamber, the combination of side walls pivoted at their tops; a bottom pivoted at its forward end; means carried by said bottom adapted to return said side walls to their operative position when said bottom is closed; and a lever adapted to return said bottom to and retain it in its closed or oper- I0 ative position, for the purpose specified.
