TO ALL'WHOM lIT MAY CON CER:
Be it known that I, JAMES P. SMITH, of Cherry Hill, inthe county of Erie, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improvedExcavating-Vehicle; and I do hereby declare that thc following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and.use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. y s
This invention relates -to a new'and improved vehicle or self-loading wagon, which may be used for excavating the earth inthe process of grading, or inm'oving earth from one place to another; and thelinvention consists in arranging a shoe o1 hollow band on an excavating-wheel, or a wheel with revolving buckets, the position of which buckets is controlled by` a lever through an eccentric, as will be hereinafter described.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the vehicle, showing the excavating-wheel, which, 'in diameter, cor` responds, or nearly so, with the rear wh'eels of an ordinary wagon. In thiscase the excavating-whcel takes the place of onel of these wheels.
Figure 2 gives aview of the eccentric.
Figure 3 is a vertical section through the lines :z: :c and z su', showing the forml of the wagon-.body and the cxcavating-wheel. v
Figure 4 is a view of the lever, arranged on the opposite side of the wagon for the purpose of dumping the load.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.V
A represents the wagon-body.
B is the excavating-wheel.
C is a semicircular hollow band, which partially surrounds the wheel B. 4
D represents the buckets or elevators, which project from the periphery of the wheel, with Shanks which extend inwards towards the centre ofthe wheel to the eccentric.
F is the eccentric.
This eccentric is movable by means of the rod a and lever H.
The rod a is attached to the short arm J, as seen in the drawing.
On the Shanks or inner ends of the bucketsthereare friction-rolls, as seen in fig. 2, and the eccentric, F, forms a recess or groove, in which the rolls revolve.
The eccentric is placed loosely onv the axle,`but'eccentrically, so that when it is partially revolved, the
position ofthe buckets is changed.
As seen in the drawing, the buckets are in a position to operate, as it will be noticed that the buckets protrude from the periphery of thewheel, the throw ofthe eccentric being downward.
Now, if the lever His thrown forward, so that it would rest in the recess c in the stop-plate d, on the edge of the wagon-body, the throw of the eccentric would withdraw the buckets from the forward and lower portion of the periphery of the wheel, and the sa'rne motionof'the lever H would throw back the hollow `band C, by the rodf, iwhich is attached to the lower end of the lever H, and to the band. In this condition the excavatingwheel would only act the part of a wagon-wheel for transporting the load; but re'turningto the position shown in the drawing, the excavator is operating, or the wagon is being loaded.
On the lower end yof the hollow band C, there is a shovel or scraper, K, which, as the wagon moves along,`
excavates the earth, and the motion forces the earth into the scraper, while the revolving buckets D, which pass through the rim of the wheel, carry the earth upward and around the wheeltand discharge. it. into the i chute L, from whence it slides into the wagon.
The hollow band C is stationary over the wheel, except as it is movedby operating the leverV H. f
The wagon-,body is something in the form of a hopper, with a movabie or drop-bottom which is marked mj This bott-om is held up by buttons n; which are operated or turned by the lever o and rod P, as seen in iig. 4. It will be seen that the wagon is self-loading, and that, when loaded, the contents can be transported and dumped as may be desired, and'thatlit may be used to good advantage inimaking and repairing; roads, and for grading railroads, and all similar purposes.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire toseeure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the shovels D, provided with friction-rolls, with the eccentric, F, and wheel B, said eccentric being adjusted by means of a rod, a, and lever H, all constructed, arranged, and operating as andfor the purpose herein shown and described, v
2'. I claim the hollow band C, provided with a scraper, K, in combination with tbe wheel B, when said bund is adjustable simultaneously with the eccentric, F, by means of the rod fand levcx H, all constructed and arranged as described, and for the purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 13th`day of August, 1867.
` JAMES P. SMITH.
