Letters Patent No. 77,325, dated April 28, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN HEATER-RANGES.
TO ALLWVHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I ABRAHAM K. SANDERS, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a certainnew and useful Improvement in Cooking-Ranges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a fall, clearfand exact description of the said invention, reference being bad to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein-'- Figure 1 is a vertical section, transversely, of the range at the line a: m.
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section, at the line y y; and
Figure 3 is a sectional plan, at the line z z.

The object of this invention is tosupplywarm air to rooms above the range, when therangcisnot otherwise in use, or to direct the heat to the ovens andparts for cooking, and only allow the waste heat to be operative in heating a eurrent ofi' air .in its passage totheroom orv rooms above.
The nature of my invention consists in an arrangement of flues, passing from the fireplace to a heating-' chamber, around-which fines and chamber a current of air to be warmed passes, and I arrangedampers in such a manner as to direct the heat of the fi-re to the ovens and cooking portion ofthe range, and the heat that passes from them enters the aforesaid heating-chamber, so that the rangetlnay be employed for cooking purposes to its fullest capacity, and any surplus heat be employed for warming a current of airto pass into the rooms above, or when the range is not employed forcooking, the heat of the fire is availed of entirely for heating said current 'of air. 7
In the drawing, 1 represents the lowerportion of the range, with the fireplace b and top 0 for the reception of pets and other cooking-utensils, as usual This portion of the range is built into a fireplace, with air-spaces on each side, formed in brick-work or of metal plates. .The ovens fh ll, are fitted in the usual manner to slide into the case 0 from the front, and are provided with doors, but I-introduee a plate, 1, between the,uppcr outside angle of the oven and the case e, andl place deflecting-plates, 2 and 3, in the flue onthe opposite side of the oven, as seen in fig: 2, to direct the products of combustion towards thefront of theoven, and insiire the more 'uniforn'r heating of the same. The products of combustion pass over the ovens in the flue 4, thence through the flucs 5 and 6 to the ascending-flue, z', to the heating-chamber 7:. At each sideof the lower portion, a, of therange are fiues n n, with dampers 7,1oadiug to the vertical range of dues o 0 that extend up to the chamber k, and in this chamber fcjhorizontal plates, 8 and 9, direct the products of combustion back and forth, so as to detain-them sufliiciently to cause them to heat the plates forming such chamber beforepassi'ng away by the flucp to the chimney.
It will now be seen that the dampers 7 can be opened when the tire is being kindled, and give the most direct draught, and at the same the air in the chamber or spaces d d is being warmed, and passes ofi through a tube, 9, to the room or rooms above.
When the'dampcrs 7 are closed, the heated products of combustion all pass into the oven-case, and, by the dampers .10 and 11, may be directed to either or both ovensf Bythc dam per 12, atthe junction of the fines 5 andb, the fire may be checked, if desired, by partially closing the draught-space and opening a cold-air inlet from the front plate. This damper has before been used in;this connection and for this purpose,
Ifdesired, part of the products of combustion mey be directed through the range of pipes, 0 u, on one side, while a p ortionof the'heot passes up to one of the ovens, the dampers giving complete control of the direction in'whieh the heat is to travel, and its intensity either in heating a. current of air for'wnrming purposes, or in effecting baking, boiling, or other culinary operations.
What I claim, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The arrangement of the flues o o and dampers 7, at the sides of tho range, -in the air-spaces d, in com" binotion with the tides g, to the ovens h h, as and for the purposes specified.
2. The healting-ehamber 70, provided with the plates 8 and 9, in eombinnt ovens h 71., tho patts being arranged and operating in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
