PATENTED 00Tf25, 1904.
7 W. ROCHE. ELECTRIC CIGAR LIGHTER.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 29, 190%.
N0 MODEL,
UNITED STATES Patented October 25, 1904.
PATENT OFFIC ELECTRIC CIGAR-LIGHTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 772,963,,dated October 25, 1904. Application filed January 29, 1904. Serial No. 191,146. (No-modell) To all whom it may concern/ Be it known I, VVILLIAM'RooHE, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Jersey City, Hudson county, New Jersey, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Cigar-Lighters, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to electric cigar-lighters comprising means for producing a spark by which a body of inflammable material, such as alcohol or benzene, 'is lighted.
The object of myinvention is to produce an effective and powerful spark and also to improve the torch by means of which the alcohol is held in proximity to the spark.
.Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan of acigar-lighte'r embodying my improvements with parts broken away. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation on line 22 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section substantially on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Q
A designates a box or casing made of suitable material and containing a battery B, a
coil 0. anda receptacle D for the fuel E. A wire F connects one terminal of the battery with one terminal of the coil. The other pole of the battery is connected by a wire G with a contact member H, secured at one end, but otherwise free to move elastically. This con- .tact member is made of spring metal and is preferably horizontal. A similar contact member H is located adjacent to the member H and is connected bya wire I with the second terminal of the coil O. The members H H may converge toward their free ends, as
shown in Fig. 1, and beneath them may be 10 cated a drip-pan J. Into the fuel-receptacle D is arranged to dip a torch comprising a handle K, a head or collar L, forming a cover for the said receptacle, a shank M, with a flattened enlargement Mi, and a coil or spiral Wire N surrounding the enlargement M and preferably also the adjoining portion of the shank-body. In this manner a sufliciently strong and resistant body is formed for taking fuel from the receptacle D and passing it over the contact members H H. Fig. 3 clearly shows the relatively large capacity of theholder thus produced and also that the enlargement M, being located within the coil N, forms a brace or stiffener for the coil.-
When the torch is applied to the contact members H Hwith its coil N, the said mem bers are bent toward the drip-pan J, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, and the circuit through the battery, the coil C, and the members H H is closed through the torchwire N. As soon as this Wire passes beyond the ends of the members H1H these members being released will by their elasticity snap upward, their quick movement producing a powerful break-spark. This spark ignites the fuel carried by the torch, and the latter may then be usedfor lighting cigars or for analogous purposes.
Various modifications may be made without departing from the nature of myinvention.
I claim-and desire to secure by Letters Patent T' l. A device of the class described, comprising two conducting members extending alongside of each other, said members being stationary at one end and elastically flexible in the same direction at their-other ends, a spark-producing device connected with the stationary ends of, said members, a drip-pan located beneath the flexible ends'of said members, and a conducting fuel bearing torch adapted to move said members in the same direction toward the drip-pan against their elasticity and to then release them for a quick break of the circuit.
- 2. A device of the character described, comprising two converging conducting members extending alongside of each other, said members being securedat one end and elastically flexible in the same direction at the other convergent ends, a spark-producing device connected wi'thsaid members, and a conducting fuel bearing torch adapted to move said members against their elasticity and to then release them for a quick break of the circuit. 3. .In a device of the character described,
contact members, a spark-producing device to this specification in the presence of two suhconnected therewlth, and afuel-bearmg torch scrlblng Witnesses. adapted to engage said members, said torch f 1 V comprising ashank having a flattened portion, ILLIAM hobnh' 5 and a fuel-holding coil surrounding said flatitnesses:
tened portion. EUGENE EBLE,
In testimony whereof I have signed my name EUGENE L. B EGAR'I.
