To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM JosErI-i KYLE, of No. 2116 South Sixty-fifth street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electrical Testing Apparatus, whereof the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention is particularly designed for identifying individual conductors in cables including a plurality of conductorsby charging a selected conductor with a current capable of producing a characteristic sound or tone in a telephone receiving instrument con- 5 neoted with that conductor. Such an operation is known as a tone test and is utilized in telephone practice in splicing cables, connecting up junction-boxes, and testing back to the cable-head in the telephone-exchange 2 from manholes or other stations on the line.
In the ordinary method of making such tone tests the testing-current is derived from an alternating-currentgenerator located at the exchange-station, and the tester at the distant 5 station, Where said current is to be applied to the selected wire, is supplied with said current through any convenient circuit, usually one of the wires of the cable being tested. In a portable device constructed and arranged for testing electric circuits, the combination with an inclosing casing; of a generator within said casing; means to vary the current from said generator; a transformer comprising primary and secondary coils within said casing; a primary circuitincluding said generator and said primary coil; means to automatically make and break said primary circuit; a secondary circuit separate from said primary circuit and includingsaid secondary coil, and, means exterior to said casing to detachably connect said secondary circuit with the circuit which is to be tested including separate and distinct terminals for the primary and secondary circuits, substantially as set forth.

In a portable device constructed and arranged for testing electric circuits, the combination with an inclosing casing; of two pairs of terminals mounted upon said casing and respectively arranged to detachably connect with circuits to be tested; a generator within said casing; circuit connections between said generator and both pairs of said terminals;
means, within said casing, to supply one pair of terminals witha secondary currentinduced from said generator and having characteristics of an alternating current; and, means, within said casing, to supply the other pair of said terminals with a direct current from said generator, substantially as set forth.

In a portable device constructed and arranged for testing electric circuits, the combination with an inclosing casing; of two pairs of terminals mounted upon said casing and respectively arranged to detachably connect said circuits to be tested; a generator within said casing; circuit connections between said generator and both pairs of said terminals; means within said casing to supply one pair of terminals with a secondary currentinduced from said generator and having characteristics of an alternating current; means within said casing to supply the other pair of said terminals with a direct current from said generator; and, a switch carried by said casing arranged to control the connections between said terminals and said generator, substantially as set forth.
10. In a portable device constructed and arranged for testing electric circuits, the combination with an inclosing casing; of two pairs of terminals mounted upon said casing and respectively arranged to detachably connect with circuits to be tested; of a generator within said casing; a condenser within said casing; interlinking primary and secondary circuit connections between said generator and one pair of said terminals, including said condenser in the secondary circuit; and, primary circuit connections between said generator and the second pair of said terminals; whereby said first pair of terminals are supplied with a secondary current induced from said generator and having characteristics of an alternating current, and, said second pair of terminals are supplied with a direct current from said generator, substantially as set forth.
