TO ALL WHOM IT MAY, CONCERN:
Be it known that I, I. J'. KIDD, of Youngs Settlement, in the county of Bastrop, and in the State of Texas, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton-Choppers; and do hereby declare thatthefol lowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and
, the letters of reference markedfthereonr In the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, A'represen'ts a frame, of suitable size, and of any material required, adjusted or secured on the axle or horizontal shaft B. The shaft has attached to it, nearthe middle, a cog-wheel, 1),. and at .both extremities the carriage and drivemheels .11 F. TheframeiA has a cross-piece, it framed into it, a little in front of the axle B, and two longitudinal pins g g framed into the front end of the frame A and the cross-piece k. Adjusted longitudinal-1y in the fram'e, to the cross-bar k, and the rear end of the frame, is a horizontal shaft, 0, upon. one end of whichis secured a cog wheel, E, which I .meshes in and is operated by the cog wheel D. H-H represent circular heads or whe'els, rigidly attached to the shaft, at any suitable distance apart, and made of any suitable size. I
Upon either: inner or outer side of the wheels H H are screwed or fastened knives, K K, which are made o'f good steel, shai-pened,and bent so that the ends' are at right angles tvith the cutting-edge, as seen in the drawings. I
These knives are placed 'atany angle deemed most suitable, and project beyond the periphery of the wheels H H, for thepurpose of cutting or chopping out a part of the young cotton-plants, which come up in a continuous row, and leaving hills a proper distance apart The size of the hills is easily regulated by an increase or decrease in the number of knives, and the distance apart by the length thereof.
These knives are operated byimeans of the carriage and drive-wheels F F, which, as they move over the ground, turn the. shaft B and the cog-wheel D, and'it, in turn, the cog-wheel and shaftC, upon which the wheels H H are secured, to which'las't the knives K K are fastened. L L represent ploughs or scrapers, which may be used as a cultivator, and run on both sides of the row of cotton.. Said ploughs are adjusted in the pieces 9 g, as shown.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claimras 'new,,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
- 1.- The knives K K, secured to the disks H H and shaft 0, when constructed and operated substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The arrangement. ofthe shafts or axles B' and C, and their cog-wheels D and E, disks H H, and knives K K, with the frameA, provided with cross-bar b, longitudinal pieces 9 g, and the ploughs L L, substantially in the manner as and for thepurpose specified. I I
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand and seal, this 11th day-of December, 1 867. I V I I. J. KIDD. 1,. s.] Witnesses: I
