ALLAM, a citi- Zen of the United States of America, residing in the city and county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements inSc'rew-Holding Attachments for Screw-Drivers; and I do declare the following to be a full. clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the lettors of reference marked thereon,-which form a part of this specification.

or devices adapted to be attached to screwdrivers, whereby a screw may be held in proper position when the user of the screw-driver is obliged to reach a considerable distance, making it diificult to start the screw with an in strument of ordinary construction.
Generally speaking, my improved device sleeve or ferrule are placed two sleeve segments or parts which engage a shoulder at the lower extremity of the ferrule, butextend inwardl y beyond said shoulder, whereby the ferrule will not pass the shoulders of the screwdriver shank in either direction. Also located within the ferrule is'a packing-ring, the tube being threaded in the ferrule, whereby the packing-ring may be made to grasp the sham k of the screw-driver more or less tightly, as

The opening B in the bottom of the sleeve is ofsufficient size to allow the sleeve to pass over eithershoulder- A Above the sleevesegments is located a packing-ring D, com- 'posed of leather or other suitable material.
The upper extremity of the sleeve B is interiorly threaded, and into it is screwed the lower extremity of a screw-holding tube E,
which is interiorly beveled, as shown at E, whereby as the tube is screwed against the packing-ring D the latter isforced inwardly against the shank of the screw-driver, whereby the tension of the device on the shank may be regulated atwill. .'The object of an arrangernent of this kind will be readily understood, since it is necessary that the device be slipped downwardly on the shank of the l screw-driver far enough to allow the latter to be used as an ordinary device when there is no necessity for using the attachment. h en, however, the attachment is needed, it is necessary to move it toward the driving end of the screw-driver far enough so that the tube E shall project beyond the nick-engaging extremity of the driver. In this event itis evident that some provision must be made to prevent the device from slipping down on the shank from this position of adjustment. The mechanism heretofore described performs this function. Moreover, it is not desirable that the device should slip down upon the shank of the driver farther than is necessary, and for this reason the divided sleeve C is employed, whereby the device cannot be moved downwardly or toward the handle of the screwdriver farther than the lower shoulder A.
From the foregoing description the use and operation of my improved device will be readily understood. hen it is in use, it should be moved to the position shown in Fig. 2, whereby the tube E projects beyond the upper extremity of the nick-engaging end of the screw-driver. The screw is then dropped into the tube, Which will support it in position until its extremity is started into the Wood part F. If it is not desired to use the device, it may be moved downwardly to its limit of movement, as shown in Fig. 1. in this event the nick-engaging end of the scrm driver protrudes beyond the tube E, and the instrument is capable of use the same as if the attachment were not in place.
In the construction shown in Fig. 3 the nick-engaging extremity of the screw-driver is formed flat and is provided with a tongue A to lit the groove or nick in the screw end.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination with a screw-driver having a reduced portion and shouldersat the opposite extremities of the reduced portion, of a sleeve mounted on said reduced portion and having an opening interiorly threaded in the upper extremity, its lower extremity being partly closed, adivided ring located within the sleeve, a packing-ring located in the sleeve above the divided ring, an open-ended tube exteriorly threaded to enter the threaded extremity of the sleeve and having its inner extremity beveled to force the packingring against the shank of the screw-driver tor the purpose set forth.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a screw-driver having a reduced portion and having shoulders at the opposite extremities of said reduced portion, a. short sleeve mounted on said reduced portion of the screw-driver, said sleeve being open and interiorly threaded at its upper extremity, and partly closed at its lower extremity, the opening, however, in its lower extremity he ing large enough to allow it to slip over the shoulders of the shank, a divided ring placed within the sleeve and resting upon the lower extremity thereof but projecting inwardly to close the opening in the bottom of the sleeve sufficiently to prevent the sleeve lrom passing beyond the shoulders of the screw-driver shank, a packing-ring inserted in the sleeve above the ring-segments, and a screw-holding tube threaded in the upper extremity ol the sleeve and having its lower extremity interiorly beveled for the purpose set lorth.
