I SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 772,869, dated. October 18, 1904.

To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. CHAMBER- LAIN, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented a new and ImprovedHat-Machine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. f
This invention relates to improvements in machines for forming bell-crowned hats offelt or similar material, an object being to provide a machine by means of which bellcrowns may be quickly and uniformly pressed into shape without danger of tearing the hat material.
I will describe a hat-machine embodying my invention and then point out the novel features inthe appended claims.

The machine-frame comprises legs 1, extended from a suitable base 2, and movable through openings in the top crossbars of the legs and through cross-bars 3 are rods 4, the
lower ends of'which are connected to-a crossbar 5, having a link connection 6 with a footpedal. 7, and this cross-bar is also connected, by means of a link 8, with a lever 9, pivoted to the frame, and from this lever 9 a spring 10 extends to a connection with the frame and is designed to move the rods 4 upward when the foot-pedal is released. the rods 4 are screw-threaded, and adjustable on the screw-threaded portion is a cross-head 11, held as adjusted by means of jamenuts 12 at the top and jam-nuts 13 engaging against the lower side.
The upper die consists of two members 14 The upper ends of' together by means of a latch 18, having swinging connection with one of the sections and adapted to engage in a notch 19 on the-other section. On the top of the die is a guide and lifting plate 20. This plate is connected to the bolt 16 and hasarc-slots 21, into which bolts 22 from the die-sections pass.- This plate is provided with a rib 23, designed to be engaged by clamping-jaws 24, carried on the cross-head 11. By this arrangement it is obvious that the upper die maybe raised and lowered by manipulating the foot peda]. Each section'of the upper die is provided with a recess, the walls of these recesses being curved inward and downward, so as to form the'outer portion of a bell-crowned hat, and
the lower surface 25 of the-die is designed to press upon the material to form the brim, the said brim being pressed upon the brim-die ring 26, supported on a bed-plate 27, and this bed-plate 27 is provided with legs 28, which rest on the table 29, arranged in the machineframe. I i
The lower or inner die consists of a plurality of swinging sections 30 31. The sections 30 are somewhat heavier than the sections 31 and are also narrower at the top, and each section 30 at the'edges of its top is beveled, as indicated at 32, these beveled edges being designed to engage with inwardly-extended flanges 33 on the upper ends of the sections 31, the object of which will hereinafter appear. The several sections have their lower ends curved outward, the ends being'rounded, as indicated at 34, said rounded ends engaging with an annular channel 35, formed in the brim-die ring 26 and the bed-plate 27. The
outersurfaces of the sections 30 and 31 correspond in shape to the wall of the upper die.
As a means for forcing the several sections outward I employ a plunger 36, which is movable through an opening in the bed plate, the said plunger being mounted on a rod 37, the ends of which extend into guides 38, and engaging with this rod is a lever 39, which is fulcrumed on one of the legs 28, and from the outer end of this lever 39 a chain 40 extends to a collar 41, secured to one of the rods 4.
The upper end of the plunger has an annular depression 42 to receive the flanges 33 and also to receive flanges 43 of the die-sections 30. Thus the top of the plunger and the upper ends of the die-sections present when in position an unbroken surface against which the top of the hat-crown is pressed.
In the operation when the upper die is in its uppermost position and the plunger 86 in its lowered position the hat material a is to be placed over the lower die-sections, which are in the position indicated in Fig. 6that is, swung toward the center. The sections 30 of the lower die will fall below the other sections 81. After placing the material a as above stated, the pedal 7 is to be forced downward, which will cause the upper die to move downward, the sections thereof being of course closed and locked together, and at the same time the plunger 36 will move upward and by engaging with the sections 30 of the lower die will force the same outward. As the said sections 30 are moved outward and upward, the beveled edges 32 thereof engaging with the flanges of the sections 31 will swing said sections 31. hen moved completely outward or upward, the several sections will present a practically unbroken surface pressing against the inner side of the hat material. After forming the hat, as above described, the sections 14 and 15 are to be separated and then the said sections raised while the plunger 36 is lowered. During the lowering of the plunger the lower die-sections will fall downward by gravity. Then of course the completed hat is to be removed.
As a means to prevent possible movement or displacement of the hat material the brimdie ring 26 may be provided with ribs 4A coincident with channels formed in the surfaces 25 of the upper die.
Having thusdescribed my invention, I claim as new and desire to procure by Letters Patent l. A hat-machine comprising a sectional .lower or inner die the said sections bein 7 2:7
mounted to swing, and a sectional upper die.
2. A hat-forming machine comprising a lower or inner die consisting of a plurality of swinging sections, a plunger for swinging said sections into operative position, and a sectional upper die.
3. A hat-forming machine comprising a lower die, consisting of swinging sections,certain of said sections being narrower than the other sections and alternating therewith, means for swinging the sections outward and upward, and an upper die consisting of two pivotally-connected sections.
4. A hat-forming machine comprising a lower or inner die, a brim-die ring with which said sections have swinging relation, a vertically-movable plunger for moving said sections in one direction, and a two-part upper die.
5. In a hat-forming machine, a lower or inner die, an upper die consisting of two pivotally-connected sections, a plate connected to the pivot of said sections and having arc-slots, bolts passing from the upper die-sections into said slots, means for raising and lowering the upper die, and means for locking the two sections thereof together.
6. In a hat-forming machine, a lower or inner die, an upper die consisting of two pivotally-connected sections, handles on the sections, a locking dev ce for the sections, a plate having connection with the pivot of said sections, the said plate being provided with slots, bolts passing from the die-sections into said slots, a rib on the upper side of said plate, a vertically-1novable cross-head, and means for engaging said cross-head with said rib.
7. .ln ahat-forming machine, a bed-plate, a. brim-die ring supported on the bed-plate, a lower or inner die consisting of sections having swinging relation to the brim-die ring, said sections being longitudinally curred, inwardly-extemled flanges on the upper ends of the sections, a vertically-moval)le plunger having an annular recess at its upper end for receiving said flanges, and an upper die.
8. In a hat-forming machine, an upper die consisting of two pivotally-eonnected sections, and a lower die consisting of a plurality of segmental swinging members, certain of said members being wider than the others, the narrower members having their upper edges beveled, and means for swinging said members in one direction.
9. In a hat-forming machine, an upper or outer die, consisting of two pivotally-connected sections, a lower or inner die consisting of a plurality of swinging members, vertically-movable rods arral'iged in the frame of the machine, a cross-head connected with said rods, means for comiecting said cross-head with the upper die, a plunger, a lever engaging with said plunger, and a connection between the outer end of said lever and one of said rods.
