PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK SHAY, or NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
' SPECIFICATION Application fild June 15, mm. j
Be it known that I, FRA NK SHAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in
have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in a Combined Clean-Out, Backwater- Trap, and Cellar-Drain; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the sa me', reference; being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
. The general object of this. invention is to provide a clean-out for drainpipes which shall also permit the inflow of water to said drain and yet prevent backing up or outflow More particular objects of the invention are to enable the valvelmeansin the said device to be temporarily removed out of the way and provide an unobstructed passage for cleaningout the drain, to. at the same time premeans, and to secure other advantages and results, some of which may be herelnafter reof the working parts.
The invention consists in the improved com- Water-trap and in the arrangements and combinations of parts of the same, all substantially as'will be hereinafter set forth, and finallyembraced in the clauses of theclaim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings,
responding parts in each of the several fig-- my improved device 'Fig 2 is an undertion, and 'Fig. ,3 is a view from below with the valve-ball removed and its retaining means;
passage.
In said drawings, 2 indlcates a cylindrical drain-pipe and packed therein with oakum an impervious fit. The upper end of said ferformingpart of Letters Patent No 772,583, dated October 1 8, 1904.
Seria1No. 2 12,620. (No model.)
a cap 4, perforated, as. at 5, to permit the drainage of water and having a central angular boss 6 to receive a wrench. It will be un derstood that said perforatedcap 4 is adapted when my deviceis in final position to lie flush with the surface to be drained and close the end of the drain-pipe.
At the under side of the cap 4 is a funnellikeor conical extension 7 preferably formed of sheet metal and arranged with its upper edge within the threaded flange 8 ofthe cap. Said extension 7 may be attached to the cap 4 in any suitable manner and either permanently or removably, as desired. At the lower end ofthe extension -7 its edges are rule is'interiorly' threaded, as at 3, to receive curled outward, as at'9, to form a circular seat for a valve-ball 10. Said ball 10 may be ofv any construction desired, although I have shown it formed of an interiorbody portion 11 of cork, with a cover-12 of rubber.
It will be understood that in operation-the ball- 10 is raised by floating against-the end 9 of-the extension 7 to prevent ,backflow of water outof the drain, and therefore means must beprovided to support the ball in idle position, and at the same time said means must be movable to'enable'the device to perform its function observing as a clean-out. To this end I have arranged in the lower end of the ferrule 2 a ball-support hingedtothe ferrule and adapted to fold or swing against the sides of the said ferrule.
I have shown a construction consisting of two wires 13, each bent into hernispherical shape and having its ends 14: bent outwardly apart into the same straight line and adapted to enter perforations 15 in the walls of the ferrule. These two Wires are arranged diametrically at right angles to' each other, and one is provided with a notch or recess 16, into which the other may be snapped when the said wires are in position. Therefore, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the ball is securely supported; but when the cap 4 and ball 10 are removed for purposes of cleaning out the drain then the said wires 13 can be swung against the sides of the ferrule, as shown in Fig. 3, to provide an unobstructed passage into the Obviously other means of hinging the ballsupport than those specifically set forth may be provided Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention the purpose of which is to provide a ball-support which shall not be separable or detachable from the ferrule, but still adapted to move out ofthe direct passage-way. I do not, therefore, wish to limit myself by the positive descriptive terms herein employed except as-the state of the art may require.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is l. The combination with the ferrule 2, havand a valve-support comprising a plurality of parts each hinged to the ferrule and adapted to fold thereagainst or to be extended into transverse engagement with the other of said parts. l
4:. The combination with the ferrule having at its upper end a cap providing an interior downwardly-facing valve-seat, of a float-val ve, and a valve-support comprising bent wires arranged diametrically of the ferrule and having their ends journaled in perforations in the walls thereof.
5. The combination with the ferrule having at its upper end a cap providing an interior downwardly-facing valve-seat, of a float-valve, and a valve-support comprising bent wires arranged diametrically of the ferrule and having their ends journaled in perforations in the walls thereof, one of said wires being notched to receive another in final position.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 13th day of June, 1904.
FRANK SHAY.
